Painting a plastic outer wing

In my quest to find a new outer wing for my truck so far the only one I have been able to put my hands on is a plastic one. So my question is how do I paint it? Sand it ? Plastic Adhesion Promoters? Any tricks? Since it is plastic will regular auto body paint work for a top coat or does it have to be something with some flex, since I would think that plastic moves a bit more than the metal counter part. Any help or insight would be great.
Thanks

I painted mine with the same stuff as the rest of the truck, no problems after a year.
the thing that sucked was that the wheel arch holes were all in the wrong place

Well that is good to know. I am not really nuts about the plastic, but I can't seem to find the part in metal.

I am a big fan of the aluminum outer wings. Very well made and coated with a passivated black finish that you can prime right over.

Unless you're a stickler for originality, I personally wouldn't bother with the side vent on a tdi. I deleted the side vent on my rebuild because it's pretty much cosmetic. It makes the air intake routing complex, it takes up more room in the engine bay, and the plastic intake box that installs in the wing competes for space with a cage. Just a thought.

Well I wouldn't say I am a stickler, its just I already have a snorkel for the side vent and all the other items to make it work. At this point in the game I am not into doing any more custom work. I know it would be fairly easy, but I have reached me restoration end on both money and patience. Plus I am ready to drive my truck, this May will be 1 year that I have owned it and I have never had it on the road. Took 3 damn months to get it from the UK then took me until November to start working on it, so I am just ready to drive the damn thing already. And at this point I have a rolling chassis, so I still have a ways to go before that happens. So adding another project to my list at this point just doesn't make me too happy. But believe me the thought crossed my mind. Even though I hate the plastic there are a bunch of people that have great things to say about it and I already have it sitting at my shop ready to be painted. So for now that is what I am going to do.

Cut one into the wing. Make a template from the old wing and go for it.

I thought the side vents are recessed into the wing?

They are, but should be OK since he is running a snorkel that protrudes - it's not like a vent cover that would sit proud if not recessed.

I used a plastic wing on my Td5, didn't have any problems, alignment is a little tougher, the plastic doesn't give as much as the AL wing.

The snorkel is where I ran into problems, on my Td5 and also a older Ninety that I did a LHD conversion on.
The Ninety had a Disco 200 put in, and a 300/Td5 (right side) snorkel added. The hole in the wing was just cut out, not recessed, that wasn't a problem. The problem is the hose routing. It was fine when RHD, but the snorkel was made with a protrusion into the inside of the wing, and it wouldn't work with the LHD heater. I had to buy the 300 factory intake parts that fit under the heater and seal it to the inside of the wing, then cut off the protrusion on the snorkel and seal it to the outside of the wing for a watertight connection.

Same problem with the Td5, the hose that came with the snorkel was supposed to fit under the heater, but it wouldn't, plus the protrusion on the snorkel where the hose clamped to it was also hitting the heater. So I did it the same way I did the Ninety.

Guess it depends on the brand of snorkel. The "steel and hose" snorkels use the factory parts on the inside of the wing, and the ABS snorkels (like the ones I was dealing with) come with a replacement hose that is SUPPOSED to run under the heater. They were probably designed for RHD and Puma vehicles, although they are advertised for LHD 300/Td5 trucks also.
