New TD5 hinges?

I would like to put some new hinges on my 90 - the old ones are worn and sag...

I have heard that the newer TD5 hinges are more robust and have a washer or other some such buffer to prevent metal-on-metal grinding...

Does anyone have any expereince with these newer hinges and if they can be fitted easily to a 94 NAS D90? (ie. are they different from an original hinge?)

Thanks!

Don

Should work fine. Better design but uses the same mounting points

I replaced mine with the new TD5 hinges on my 94 and no problems at all, the hinges do come a bit rough and need primer & paint. You will need a self etching primer to apply several coats and sand in between the coats...then the paint afterwards...all new stainless hardware should make it last for many years to come.

Make sure you get the new style plastic pieces too as the footprint of the new style hinge is slightly different.

Does anyone have a good source for these, and what exactly I should be looking for? Are they just "TD5 Hinges" or do I look for a particular year like "2002 onwards" or something like that?

I'm not sure about pricing, especially since you are in Canada, but both George at Rover's Down South and Stephen at Safari Rover carry them and will have the plastic pieces I was talking about as well.

Thanks a bunch!

I've dealt with Paddock before - good guys - lots of strange parts - I picked up some spare drive shafts for my Series 3 LWB from them last year..

Would really appreciate the partno for the hinges themselves..

Cheers!

You also have to trim the door cappings slightly.

I don't have all the part numbers handy to check, but I would get stainless hardware to replace the original. Stig's has a pretty good selection of stainless hardware for a fair price with the exchange rate as it is.

The quantities look correct Don...

JimC's point about the trimming is correct, I used a small air powered trimmer....gently, very gently and it comes out perfect...to level the door I used some wooden shims and taped the door shut once I had it in place.

My cappings needed to be repainted anyway, so I took a dremel tool and carefully sliced off the part that was in the way. They were of course off the door at the time.

How did you repaint them? I'm only used to painting large sections of trucks with my hvlp..

Also, Paddocks hasn't returned my emails as yet for those parts - it may be time to make a phone call...

That looks like a great job..

Is there any trick to getting the retaining nuts to line up? I haven't done S3/Defender hinges before so I'm a bit ignorant of what's require to fit new ones... do the old nuts just drop inside the channel when you remove the hinges?

The nuts on the bulkhead side are captive nuts in a "J" shaped clip, so they just stay put. LenB repainted my cappings for me when I lived in CA - he's pretty talented that way. Nothing much to it. I did do a lot of sanding and prep though.
