New owner - roof rack & stereo question - 1984 defender 90

Hi all-

I just purchased a restored 1984 right hand drive 2.25 liter gasoline powered Defender. Couple of questions..

1) In 1984 was it actually called a Ninety instead of Defender 90?

2) - I'm looking for a roof rack - I like the look and will not use it to haul things. Do aluminum ones look OK or should I go for steel? Any suggestions on a good looking one if so that ships from US?

3) There is a single DIN radio in the dash that appears to be put in with some type of after market case. It doesn't look great and I'd like to replace it with a double-DIN stereo with a flat screen. Has anyone with my dash style had success with the Defender Console made by MUDD and if so, how does it work, and look. Or do you have a better option? I've attached a pic of my dash.

Thanks everyone. I look forward to participating and reading the threads on the site.

Jason

Try again on the dash pic, I don't see it. Also couldn't hurt to post a pic of the truck as well to help assess your roof rack question.

If you aren't going to use the rack I would go with a Safety Devices cage if you don't already have one. It will help keep you alive in the event of a roll over - a roof rack won't.

One other questions. How can I tell if this was a military vehicle or built for personal use? Does the VIN give you some type of clue or can someone here tell?

1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Rover_Defender

2: With that black roof, you want to get a rack that is powder coated black. Look at the Safety Devices site Land Rover & Expedition Roof Racks | Safety Devices Order through lucky 8

Truth! Go SD with a cross bar grid in the back most section of the cage. Safe and great looking, yet can handle the occasional loads. Best of both worlds that way. And you are all set up for a slide out single DIN unit. That's the oem style mount. I prefer them as it puts the screen up high for easy GPS.
