I test drove it for about 5 miles and the fuel gauge started on E and ended on E because it's not hooked up yet.

We have the same engine in a 1993 LWB RR Classic and it got about 30 MPG before Tyler turned up the fuel almost to max. Then it dropped down to about 23 - 25.

I commonly unhook everything when all the wiring is done and wrap in black electrical tape and use that tape in a jar rubberized coating on the ends so it won't unravel.

Also need to get a clip that will strap in the boost valve to keep it in place.

Air filter is connected.
Installed a 2.5 air cleaner that was moved to the right front.

Now to finish up the wiring.

22.5 mpg

Maiden voyage was 280 miles with consumption of 12.5 gallons = 22.5 MPG which is not bad for a 4JB1-T with a 1.4 T-case and the fuel turned up with a boost bleed-off in place.

Pulls nicely with lots of torque.

Pictures of No: 2.
Very very fast...
Much faster than a 200 or 300TDI.
This one was RHD so the custom air cleaner setup is different.
Has the R380 Stumpy with a 1.4 T-Case.

Didn't have an accelerator cable long enough so we robbed the firewall cable grommet from a shorter cable and made a new clevis pin with a hole in the right place.
Then found a bicycle cable that was long enough, threaded it through the clevis hole and it works great.
Adjustable cable end on the engine side is also from the bike shop.

Yesterday, Tyler and I were able to tune the fuel and boost on this latest 4JB1-T.
We are at about 16 lbs of boost with only small amounts of smoke under load... about the same amount of smoke as a stock Rover TDI, but much faster...
In fact, very very very fast.

In the stock form, the 4JB1-T is faster than the 200/300TDI.
With stock settings, drove it a few days to get a feel for those flat spots that occur when you slow down to 50 MPH in 5th, for example, and then floor it to increase speed and have it run flat while you wait for the IP to pump fuel in after it builds enough boost (all effected by the ALDA setting which I don't want to mess with).
With the small Rover TDI intercooler, fuel turned up, and a manual boost controller, the engine transitions without any slow flat spots and builds 10 lbs of boost almost immediately off the line.
Then accelerates to a point where you want to let off the petal because it's scary fast.

I can't to drive the 4JB1-T 2.8 liter Isuzu 110 Turbo Diesel each day.
Was on the upgrade of an overpass Saturday on the way to Mark's house to pick up the porta-power.
Driving with a garman for accurate speedo (cable broke last week).
Behind someone going 56 MPH in the left lane when an opening to pass on the right came available.
Floored it as I pulled in the right lane looked down as I went in the left lane and was going 78 MPH.
This took place in about 3 seconds just before reaching the top, so all of it was up-hill.

The other thing very very impressive is that it's Thursday and I am just above 3/4 of a tank after a Monday morning fill up.
With the TDI would be less than 1/2 a tank driving the same miles.
A conservative guestimate is returning around 30 MPG, but probably higher.

Where does the 4JB1-T come from???

This is a 2.8 liter TD SUV engine from a ROW Trooper... NOT an engine from a big clunky delivery truck.

Isuzu makes some great engines, I love my big 'ol clunky 4BD1T delivery truck engine, which moves my fat 110 up the mountains just fine.

I once heard the 4JB1T referred to as the "Thinking Gentleman's engine conversion." Keep up the great work.

So how does Isuzu nomenclature work?

4 I know stands for 4 Cylinder and T at the end is for Turbo.

And why is the 4JB1-T be so much smoother than the 4BD1-T? Sounds like both can put down the power.
