Exclamation Install Puma Dashboard on 300 TDI without installing a new Gearbox

Hey I just bought a 2002 300 TDI Defender and I'm getting into modding it. I quite like the Puma dashboard, but I've been hearing that you need to install a Discovery gearbox so that the gear leaver will not knock on the Puma dash. Question is whether I can keep the original Defender gearbox but install the Puma dash? Thanks in advance

Not without some seriously custom fabrication. How good are your fab skills?

Will that be cheaper than getting a new gearbox?

I don't think you understand what you are attempting to do.

If you don't understand what an mt82 is, I don't think you're ready to do this.

Read this:

A 2002 should have been a td5, but I guess anything could happen out there in the real Rest Of World! ;-)

Quick fix? Torch/Bend the snot out of it!

Is it possible that Uncle D's advice regarding the shifter angle being "adjustable to a driver's stature/comfortable reach for the old lt77, could be applicable to the shifter lever of the newer R380 or newest mt82?

Try to see the differences in interference from the lower dash panel as you:

want to go from this: ( image 1 )
to this: ( image 2 )

or by going disco gearbox, you'll have mating issues as evidenced by ( image 3 )

http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=67131

So it isn't going to happen without some kind of major adjustment to the shifter lever or fabrication on your part. Note the pitch at the base of the mt82 of the puma? Perhaps you could completely modify/fab the throw of your existing R380 with a slick shift and a good bend?

But then, after you've figured all that out, you'll have a heck of a job swapping all the electrical for the new gauges.

Either way, good luck, but I wouldn't attempt it. Be happy with your td5 style, or sell it and buy a puma. No reason you can't in Sri Lanka.

Land Rover continued to build 300tdi Defenders for military users and certain overseas markets long after introducing the TD5.
