Development Update

Here's the latest.

The attached images shows two new grill designs as well as two addition options for the headlight guards (large and small) using a diamond pattern instead of cross bars. The thought behind the diamond geometry is that it is more stable than cross bars and can therefore be made thinner. I may not produce the diamond guards at all. At this stage I just wanted to see what they look like. Let me know what you all think!

The Small Crossbar Guard is pretty much good to go. I'm very happy with it and i'm definitely going forward with producing it.

The Large Crossbar Guard needed some tweaks. I have beefed up the perimeter of the guard as it warped slightly when cut and I was able to bend it by hand (pushing top-bottom, not front-back). It may be that the span of the bars simply is too long for this particular material & geometry combination to work well, which is why I came up with a diamond pattern that would be more rigid. The next gen prototype should reveal if the changes were sufficient.

The Stock Alloy Grill design Is intended to look as close to stock as possible except it is anodized aluminum not plastic. As Brian mentioned I am also working on a version that has some built in functionality but this will not be revealed until I have a functional prototype.

The Diamond Grill design Uses the an expanded mesh pattern but its is actually water jet cut out of a thick piece of aluminum so it is going to be much more durable and rigid than most grills. Because the material is thicker the ribs can be made pretty thin which increases air flow without comporting strength. The intent is to make the most durable and long lasting grill on the market so unfortunately it may also be the most expensive grill on the market due to extended cutting time and small volume.

I think the diamond grill looks sharp. The all aluminum stock one is a great idea as well.
Any ballpark on price for each?

I like the OEM looking grille. (Small front)

+1 on ballpark cost?

No price yet. I should know more in the next couple of weeks when I hand over drawings to the fabricator. Prepare for the worst when it comes to cost. They will not be cheaply made. The stock one will be an assembly of many individual bent sheet metal parts, slotted and welded. The diamond one will be water jet cut out of a solid block. The quality should be above and beyond what's currently on the market. That's the goal anyway.

Design update

I made some changes to the small diamond shaped headlight guard today. I moved the mounts so they sit on top/bottom versus left/right. I also made rear light guards in the same diamond pattern that are designed to replace the stock/nas rear light guards. They would fit in the same holes if you already have this style guard.

After 3 weeks of waiting I finally got my anodized samples in today. Looks good and looking forward to wear testing the Type III finish. These designs have already gone through another iteration since then but I will wait to sample those up until after Expo.

Oh yeah. I'll be at the Defenders Northwest booth the whole time so come by and see us. We should definitely try to arrange a Defender Source happy hour. I'll be driving my D90.

All your designs look great!

Carl - two somewhat off topic questions:

What CAD program are you using? All the renderings look fantastic, nice work!

Also what headlights are you running on your 90? They look pretty awesome. Aftermarket LED?

Solidworks for modeling and Keyshot for rendering. I have JW Speaker 8700 Evolution Headlights installed (LED).

Great products Carl,

I'm in for everything . . . . once I get a Defender. Will you be posting on the forums once they become available?

Slowl but making progress. First round of prototypes will be at Overland Expo and I'll start second round which are already designed once I get back. I'm also broadening my scope of fabricators and getting more quotes. I hope to shoot for July or August and I will post date and pricing here once they have been determined. Photos of the 1st round will be on my website (www.tiktaalik.com) which should be up and running on Thursday next week.

Still traveling back from Overland Expo. The plan is to prototype both the aluminum OEM version and the Diamond version grill. Will be a couple more weeks before I have photos of those.
