Defender 200Tdi refresh

Thought I would put up some photos and words to my head gasket project that turned into a head refresh. The engine was purchased from a shop down in Atlanta so I never recieved any info on its milage or service history. With that in mind and some blow by concerns I decided to replace the head gasket, replace a few old hoses, new fan clutch, remove 2lbs of RTV, and inspect every damn bolt. I found heavy carbon buildup about halfway up on push rod #8 which I believe is a known problem area on these engines (but I could be wrong). Found a few missing bolts/studs. I replaced all of the springs, retainers, gaskets, seals, studs, and most all of the nuts & bolts.

Head off,

All 8 retainers were in need of replacing.

Tearing down the head

all organized. Definitely went overboard but a little OCD never hurt.

Nice and skimmed.

Rebuilt ready for action

after a 650mi trip up to Maine, no issues to report.

Great work Andy,
did the same with my replacement motor from that place in Atlanta... but did not take the head off as it had 410psi of compression/cly.
Lets see how long that lasts.

Good job and great pictures.
You can easily view the thin bridge between the intake & exhaust vales in the skimmed photo.
It is easy to understand why that thin strip of material often cracks.

Well done!

The bridge between inlet and exaust valve is a litte bit thicker at the 300tdi head.
But it cracked sometimes to the bore of the injection valve.

Do you changed the thin shims beyond the valve springs too?
The seats are refreashed I hope.

Thats a very nice looking head! and I like the tray. I didn't replace the shims as they looked and felt find. I could only find the 300TDi part number. Anyone know the 200TDi one?
