Closing in on a winch, final thoughts?

Thanks to Jimmy and his self-appointed RURR ambassador, I now have a cool terrrafirma winch bumper (ac version, warn). I've done a lot of reading on here and it looks like the Warn 8274 (8274-50, etc.) is the way to go. Looks like some good deals can be had on ebay.

Are there any particular years to stay away from (looks like all the 8274's are solid, so probably no)? Any other potential pitfalls I should be aware of when putting this all together? Any effective ways to deter theft?

I don't plan on wheeling it hard, but would like a winch on for those three or four times a year when I'm in the backcountry doing scientific experiments (usually dragging my son along).

thanks guys

I'm not familiar with the exact bumper you have but are you aware the 8274 mounts feet forward, not feet down like most? This and its height can often create mounting problems on "normal" bumpers.

If I could fit one I would run one though. Great winches.

Yup, the winch choice should have been made before the bumper. At this point your best bet is to determine what winch models fit your bumper and go from there.

x2 right there. not all winches fit. you should choose a model that has the solenoid box separate if the winch is hidden behind the bumper. The models with solenoid packs integrated into the housing may not fit at all.

Yeah I was all set on the 9.5 but then found a preponderance of satisfaction with the 8274. The 8274 will fit in my bumper (it's got a 24" tray and lots of depth), I just have to do some modification for the mounts, most likely have to weld in new front and bottom plates. Thanks all.

In that case carry on.

My only advice would be to do your best to verify the condition of the winch. I bought one that had some exterior sprucing but turned out to be full of mud which pitted the gears badly!

9.5 should likely suit your needs just fine btw.

That would be less of a pain to install...

What do you guys do to secure it against theft?

Park it in a garage and don't park next to jeeps when it's out in the wilderness. Its weight alone is a pretty good theft deterrent in all honesty. I'm sure you could probably source a set of keyed nuts/wrench for the warn, but I'm always afraid I'd lose something like that. I've never seen someone resort to this (you live in CT btw) but you could also probably fit a thinner gauge cord lock around those drum/wire guides and then around your bumper. Seems like overkill though.

I'm pretty sure they make special tamper resistant nuts for winch mounts. The 8274 would require some fab work to make it work since IIRC it mounts to the face of the bumper.

haha but yeah you're right. you should see the look in some of those wrangler owners' eyes when they walk by my beast.

Tempting but I'll pass. Besides, I already told this other guy that I'd trade my kidney for his winch and he agreed.

Winch theft should be the least of your concerns.
