97 D90 with Mud Console and Double Din Stereo

I just did this, and had to share. I got the Mud console from Mud UK and installed it with a double din Alping IXA-W407. Fit perfectly. Even added another 12v outlet and moved my switches that were on the left of my steering wheel over to it. Much more comfortable layout, and still have room to add other buttons.

I also installed the MUD rails from MUD UK to add more leg room, and give me a higher ride while I'm driving.

i couldn't be happier.

Two pictures, the final product after all the installation, and some cutting of the old dash console.

Salvaged the clock to keep it in the ride. I'll be adding in the old cigarette lighter later. Couldn't get it out of the old console to install, and still need to add a homelink garage door opener I got online to it, so I'll have that installed to and can get rid of my remotes.

I'll update with pics as I go along.

Nice. I like how you wired in the different switches then stock as well. Was that difficult?

Not really, I started cutting out the holes for the 12v and the switches, and then decided to take it to a professional to run the wires, and glad I did, the stereo wiring was a mess from inside the center console, and then he fished the wires across the dash for the switches. In all it was in the shop for some 8 hours, I think I paid for 6.5 of them, and that included installing a CB. The job was done cleanly and they let me watch them almost the whole time. No popped fuses and one hick-up, when I first started driving it out, the dash didn't work, no fuel gauge, no speedometer, nothing. pulled back into the garage and they got on it quick, turns out he nicked a couple of wires in the back of the center console, once he patched them everything worked great.

What did you do with the normal radio space?

Can you post a picture?

I'll post a picture when I'm at my computer. But I put a CB where the radio used to be and in place of the changer I have a deep pocket to store some junk

I'm also thinking of rhino lining or line-x ing the entire interior. Any thoughts on that?

Check the threads on Line-Xing, etc.; there's a bunch of different opinions. Some don't like it, if they line-x over screws, seat box, etc. it can be a pain later on, etc. There are of course the many +'s and the clean look of it, but some of that can be achieved through rubber mats, etc. It's a pure preference thing. Do some searches and you'll find some pics from others who have already done it and see what others like and don't like.

IMO one of the worst things I have seen done on a D90 are rhino lining. Don't do it. I is too permanent.

Here's a pretty good idea of what Line-Xing could look like:

TDI Guy - I will be adding the NAV unit to it soon, so it is NAV capable, just not plugged in.

As for the Rhino or line-x I'm still thinking about it, not a big fan of the big rubber mat

And pics of the center console with the CB, still needs work, will be adding a homelink to it somewhere, and maybe put the CB in the back pocket, and put a pocket in the front where the stereo used to be.

I saw this truck for sale in Austin right before I left for Iraq a year and a half ago. Pretty wild ride...

Wonder when it got down there? Unless I am mistaken, that truck used to be owned by a Dr. in Goldsboro, NC. The now defunct Rover Clubhouse did a good bit of the work, but I think (and I could be wrong) last time we had it in the shop it was in full soft top configuration with some really cool custom made tube half-doors... I know the owner was in the market for a 110 and was looking for one with leather, power windows, front and rear AC, etc so maybe he sold the 90?

Bob could you post a side pic of the console and also a shot of the new console from a little further back to get some perspective? I want to do the same thing on my truck but curious how much this sticks out from the rest of the dash and how low/high the touch screen radio will sit.

Thanks,
Keith

Shep, contact Carey Knause - he's user EWR on here and does custom double din set-ups such as this one that are flush mounted.
