1997 3.5L D90 - Getting it up and running

Hi all-

I'm in the process of trying to buy a 1997 3.5L D90. It has been stored indoors for about 10 years and has not run in that time. It drove in under its own power and has been well maintained.

My question is, outside of the obvious fluids, tires, etc, do any of you have suggestions for what I need to do to get this running again? I think even trying to start it without meaningful troubleshooting and research seems like a very bad idea, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to need to do before giving it a go.

FYI, I'm pretty handy but not really a mechanic beyond the 2 stroke KX 250 and fox bodied mustangs of my youth. So if I'm asking stupid questions...please bare with me.

James

Hopefully not everything has dry rotted. It's been well maintained but hasn't run in 10 years? At a minimum all fluids should be replaced, brakes checked, etc. and a full tune-up as you'd see at the 100k miles interval, etc.

Don't forget to flush the fuel system and tank. Definitely flush up to the filter, and replace said filter.

Am I alone in thinking to pull plugs, lube cyliders, turn over bit by bit?

And if motor was not rotated during storage, valve springs under compression may be a little weak after 10 years.

Check every visible bit of wiring. Critter love it, and it could short to ground, which will result in a burnt 90. Which then becomes a "fully restored, 20K mile all original, clean title" 90 for someone else...

Sorry, must be 3.9? I'm piecing information together from the VIN. Its definitely a 1997, and definitely a gas V8.

It was well maintained, and went into dry, indoor storage about 10 years ago. Nothing has happened with it since. Hasn't moved, zero maintenance, etc.

Be careful not to run it without oil pressure. Possible the 3.5 zillion seals will give out and need to be replaced. Just factor that time and effort into the offer$ and you'll be fine.

97 would be a 4.0 gems engine and wouldn't have the oil priming issue older engines have from loss of oil prime.

James, '97 would be a 4.0 GEMS motor like Uncle Doug said.
Post some pictures....stored since '06?

I'll go $5000 sight unseen.

Nope, its not "for sale." I haven't even completed the purchase yet, and I have no intention of flipping it if I get it.

Darn, well my offer still stands James.

Just out of curiosity, how much did you score this 90 for??
