What to do with my 1985 90's 2.5 petrol engine

I'm planning my 90 restoration and I'm not sure what to do about the under powered 2.5. There is a lot of info about engine swaps, but not much about modifying the stock 2.5. Anyone have any words of wisdom about maybe upgrading the cam, crank, carbs, or headers? If I did a rebuild, I would know exactly what I have. I have a local machine shop that has a good reputation and not very expensive. If I do a swap, I don't really know much about the engine I'm putting in. Even though some say they will go 500,000 miles.
Thanks for any info.

So, you don't want the engine, and want to fit a Rover V8 instead? Perhaps from an old Disco or RRC? Best to give away your 2.5 to a fellow doing a series rebuild, and spend your rebuild money on the V8.
