The rise of the Ambu

Doug asked for it... here is the Ambu.
Long story short we stripped the back off the 110. Drove from CA to Washington. Spent 15 hours swapping the Series III ambulance body and drove home... long weekend. It is a super sturdy platform. All aluminum, built like an airplane. It was in near prefect shape barring the layers of military paint.
Since then it has been a real gem of a project. We have been working on a prototype interior, which we are doing in ply then think it out better and redo. I have a long list of things to do.... (The biggest PITA is to move the wheel wells back 1-2 in) but when its all done it will have a hold enough diesel for 1200 miles, 35 gallons water, sink/stove/fridge, solar and have enough room to relax in.

We have been camping in it a lot lately and it has been great. It has blackout shades, enough length for my 6'3" frame, and a nice kitchen for the lady what else do you need.
Enjoy!

You, sir, is a badass! Love the split series windshield. Where did you get that aluminum case in the first pic? Military surplus?

Yep. It will take a while to get it just right. I may need some of your skills when the time comes time to fit a counter top.

Surplus. Wish they made them bigger... I have seen coffins but that is a bit strange.

Hey Peter, how is that tub working out for you? send over some pictures when you get a chance.

Those kirkey seats are cool seats. I like the "vintage bucket".... but the cover is ugly. too bad the sides are so tall.

I managed to get the seat a couple more inches back by removing the head rests (we are going to pad the bulkhead). It is tight but acceptable. We are keeping the bulkhead becaue it was the obvious choice once I took a hard look at how structural it is. We may not even put a cage in.

The Tub and parts are safely put away. I am about to rent an aurcraft hanger to move all things ROVER into and start in on the restoration of the Beasty from Whales...

The problem is the damn thing is actually a blast to drive. The 3.5 has been worked over and with whatever cam is in it, It totally blows away the 3.9 in the NAS truck. The steering is tight and solid and the the suspension albeit at stock ride height is smoooooooth.

Ok so you took the head rest off the normal reclining seat huh? Interesting, consider some sort of pad attached directly to the bluckhead for your head. Here is an idea the Helmet pads out of a military helmet. They can ba attached with velco stick on spots.

http://www.uscav.com/Productinfo.asp...ID=1&CatID=327

The pads simply attach to the velco and can be removed for cleaning.

Just an idea. I still think a roll bar is a good idea.

talk to ya soon,

Peter

Great Camper. Did the ambulance body bolt straight on or were there a lot of brackets to make and weld on?
As I said- I'm very interested in that truck build.
