The M416 Adventure Trailer Build Thread

I figured if I didn't do a build thread Briggsy would never let me hear the end of it sooooo without further ado here is my 1974 Johnson M416 trailer that I purchased a few months back off of Craigslist from a mil/surp hoarder.

It came with some weird hydraulic surge brake hitch that weighed about 100 pounds. That went to the recycler along with the axle that came with it. I replaced it with a Dexter 56" wide, 3500 lb axle with 6x5.5 hubs to match my daily driver FJ Cruiser. The basic "steelies" as the FJ crowd calls them look like Wolf wheels so they will also match the "look" of my 90.

Next step is to remove the box and have it soda blaster clean. Then the building can begin.

That should make for a nice camping rig. Looking forward to the build.

Awesome! Might I assume that you know of Expedition Portal? If not, check the trailer section out as well. Super duper info over there particularly on M416's.... Can't wait to see what you do!

Your Johnson does look a wee bit scaley...I have the same hydraulic set up on mine. Could you post photos of the tongue modification you did on your Johnson. Also the weekend seat refab may be of some interest to a few low counts...Thank you in advance.

$350 later:

Once the ground glass drys I'll knock off what I can and vacuum the rest off. Let the building begin!

Thanks Dave - only one thing is absolute UNOBTANIUM anymore - that is the square hanger bracket, not a U bracket as it is square across the bottom. Used for the tongue to front of tub. DO NOT throw those out - I tried to replace mine, but no one had them, and they don't make them.

Otherwise everything else can be found online - and remember, the parts are interchangeable with the old Willys Jeep platform.
