I used Kilz oil based primer, I believe it has some waterproofing properties to it, on my MDF. I believe the MDF was as close to the MDF Richard at toylander recommended. I did use wood glue on the edges of the MDF. On the underside I used caulk along all the edges, seams and everything. Then I painted the underside black with an outdoor spraypaint.

For the body I used automotive paint. Don't do that. I would use the Kilz again, but this time I would just use an exterior latex paint.

The kids run it into all kinds of things. Our has been driven in mud, water, rain, sprinklers, left in the yard and sprinklered on. The wood has been fine.

How about after painting, undercoating the bottom? Look at expedition trailer builds for ideas about keeping wood from rotting. Lots of them on expedition portal.

Never assume anything right??? Jeeze.... I took a small piece and put it in a glass of water. Made sure I rubbed it good to remove as much air/allow it to soak as best as possible as quickly as possible. I let it sit for two hours. Took the piece out of the slightly yellowished water and it looked the same as before (except wet). Impressed! I thought it'd expand like crazy!

September 2013 - Accelerator pedal

Got a chance to work on the accelerator pedal over the weekend. I've been looking for the hinge portion of it and figured I would create a spring-loaded hinge. I got the spring for a set of $1 set of 3 spring-loaded plastic clips. Then I used piece of the (future) aluminum trim for the body to make the hinge. Spring mechanism is looking strong enough, hinge is definitely strong enough and will be lightweight!
