'93 Classic

Putting a 300Tdi in my '93.
ZF is already in the truck.
Changed my kickdown cable yesterday wich wasnt terribly bad.
Made a xerox of the valve body diagram and punched holes for all the bolts so I wouldnt mess up the different lengths.

On another note--
Bolting the torque converter??
WTF dude....these bolts are impossible to access!?
I'm going through that bottom access door as it is bigger than the starter access(17mm socket wont even fit there...)
Literally had to grind down my socket and make it "thin-walled" to fit...

Anyone done this?
My cool trans bolt diagram on a shoebox lid so I could just punch holes to hold bolts.
Starter access.
Bottom access in front of sump.

You using the V8 ZF or the TDI ZF?

Its a TDI ZF... but someone previous to my ownership had put a gas kickdown cable on---too short!!
So I had to change it out after I put the trans in the truck.

It just seems really difficult to bolt up the torque converter---am I missing something?

I cant see how that would work.

I have to use a 17mm socket(ground into a thin wall) and there is no room to work.
The shortest extension and the ratchet is in the sump---no extension at all and the socket is so deep it almost comes off the ratchet.

The socket wont even fit through the notch by the starter access so that's a no-go.

I got 2 bolts into the torque converter through that bottom access door and called it quits after that.
I'll try and finish the other 2 bolts this week...<sigh>

Of course, is it possible there is a different bolt? The diesel torque converter uses the same size bolt(thread) as the V8 but is it possible they have a smaller bolt-head?
That's why I had to grind the socket thin; the bolt faces come so close to edge of the flywheel...

Well, mystery is solved.
The 300Tdi(and D2s,P38s) uses a 14mm bolt WITH A SHOULDER to the torque converter.
Thats why I'm having a hell of a time fitting the older V8(17mm) bolts in there...

Glad to hear about your progress! The bolts are a bit problematic but I didn't think they were THAT bad...glad you figured it out!

My 93 lwb is getting an isuzu 3.1 tdi & an r380. The install begins this week! Just waiting on the last couple of pieces in the mail as everything is pulled, cleaned and ready for reassembly.

Happy wrenching.

Thanks, Frank.
I wish I'd remembered the D2 style torque converter bolts---I've helped pull and replace a D2 motor at least 3x-once on my own truck.
Kinda wish I'd done a manual transmission but I'm too far in to go back now.

I still have a million little things to finish up, but at least I got the motor bolted to the ZF last night.

TDi injection pump experts---

What is this blank threaded hole below the upper right torx bolt?

Because I'm going to use it for my bracket unless that is forbidden...

Got her to run tonight.....for 30 seconds.
Shut it off to check for leaks and whatnot.
It stinks, too.
Diesel fumes in the garage....

Need to clean out the garage so I can move it out a bit.

Cool. You'll love it offroad, I ran mine all over Uwharrie when it still had the sway bars on and no lockers and it was a blast. With the sway bars off it was ridiculous, it would just keep going as long as the tires had grip, I found that it did quite well without the CDL engaged too, a little more maneuverable. The TDI/auto isn't as prone to wheelspin as the V8 either, so much easier on axles, etc.

Have you got a muffler on it?
