I was returning home from the OBX NC.
I heard a slight noise the day before...could not pinpoint anything.
I made it about 75 miles past Robert Davis' house.
When I checked again south of Richmond, half of my serp belt was shredded away and now the water pump was visibly shaky...
(In hindsight, I think I was hearing some rumbling sound of the bearings going)

I threw in the towel. AAA came in 30 minutes.

Question: Is the "P" gasket a neccesity when doing the H2o pump?? Because I'm thinking no...

It's not a necessity....BUT, its one of those things where it'll just start to leak when it decides it wants to leak. I've done them before, smearing some hylomar on the metal P-gasket before installing and it certainly gives peace of mind, but *generally* when they fail it's not a catastrophic thing but more of a weep/drip so you should have some forewarning. That said, it could also be a "while you're in there thing" if you wanted to bang (no pun intended!) it out.
