66 Series IIa 5 door

I inherited this to add to the project list. The bulkhead is shot, needs a frame and a bunch of TLC. After the P38 project is out of the way, it goes into the shop to start the rebuild. I am going to try and start the beast after going over the fuel system and checking the points/plugs/wires/cap.
This should prove to be interesting. Will post some pics in the next few days. Off to do research!

Sounds like a fun, but challenging project!

After dealing with the P38 electronics, this should be a pleasure!

This is the fine piece of british craftsmanship currently sitting in the yard. I got "tune up" parts and installed them all. Rolled the motor over a few times before hooking the coil up. Attached the coil wire and TADA! She started and ran like a champ! I wanted to jump in and drive around the hood soooooo bad, but the gas tank is being held in by a ratchet strap, and stopping will be an issue as the brakes are shot.
She ran for about an hour until the fuel ran out. All the lights worked, even the KCs on the front bumper.
I had lunch while cruzing the RN and AB web sites , making wish lists of parts I would like, and parts that are needed.
I cleaned out the cab a bit and found an old inspection/registration paper from a PO from Gordonsville, and a military traffic citation, all dated '96.
I was looking through the newest edition of the RN mag, and came upon the story for Mendo Recce. I checked out the web site and holy cow....there is a whole library of parts/repairs/tips/conversions on the OVRC web site, right down to rebuilding the wiper motors with GM parts.
First things first.....Santa, I need a frame!

Is this something you'd consider selling?

Actually Bill, I was storing this truck for Mike Vancuren. He was going to finish the pick up for his wife, then make this a v8 monster lo-rider. The drawings he made of it are sweet. When Windy came for the service last weekend, she said Mike always wanted me to have a series, and gave me the truck. In that light I just don't think I could at this time.
I might be picking your brain at some point tho.......

That "Mendo Recce" blog is pretty cool. Good luck with the build.

Well, to my mind the 66 109 5 door is just about the pinnacle of the land Rover marque. After 68, they began to go down hill and the slide still hasn't stopped. I will admit tho that the coil sprung, A arm suspension was one of Land Rover's true gifts to the world (which is why I chose to combine the best of both)
So, my friend you have what I consider to be the best of the breed.
Holy crap don't turn it into a monster V8 lo-rider. If you do you will forever kick yourself for being so dumb. I sure am. There just aren't that many of them out there.
In case you change your mind I am an instant buyer.

Get ordering! They are getting rarer! Or at least BDR is expecting on in the new year for another project truck.

I found some good "back" doors, and they are on the way. Still looking around for a frame. Also...the "door jambs" or "sills" are toast. I was told they come as a "T", meaning the whole jamb. I can't seem to locate a vendor. Input?
Thanks again for the offer Bill. You will be the first on the list if I go down that road. I am wanting to restore this with only some very minor changes (creature comforts...as in me) and keep it running as long as I can reach the tool box. Things might change later...but this is where I am headed at this time.
Thanks to everyone who has offered advise/parts/tips. You might hear from me some time in the very near future.

Ok...Ok already......MIDDLE DOORS. I stand corrected. Still new at this series stuff.

Defender t-pieces are the same size they just have a different lip for a push on seal.

Safari Rover (or heritage or whatever Stephen changed the name to) has had the t-pieces in the past. If they are not totally gone, YRM sells repair parts.

Since the look is so good, I would just repair the bulkhead (YRM or RN for repair panels), repair/replace the t-pieces, repair/replace the breakfast and replace the frame/suspension and galvanize it all and leave the look.

I think I have a slightly beat up SIIa grill sitting here if you are ever up my way.

You won't find any 2A "T" posts. They are NLA and all you can get now are reproductions that don't match.
You will find this to be true for many components. Off the top of my head (many of these items are completely unavailable anywhere):
Door handles/latches
Front door bottoms
Middle doors
Front wings
Tub sides, or any tub aluminum components for that matter.
Fuel tank (! ask me about that!) and parts for it.
Front seats
Middle row seats
Any interior trim pieces except for the tunnel cover
interior rear view mirror
Straight hand brake lever and associated hardware
Bulkhead components
Brake towers
Clutch towers
Brake/clutch reservoir
radiator
Any of the nuts and bolts that have the dished head
Rear door pulls or latching hardware
Handles for the rear chassis
Individual wiper components
Smiths round heater parts
Anything on the dash
Vent lifts or parts for them
Center seat box tool box
Did I mention no interior trim? that includes any headliner bits, interior lamps. You can get new reproduction tool box hinges.
License plate lamp
rear door spare tire mount parts
light bases. You can still find lenses, but all the bases are gone. Repro ones look like ass.
I'm forgetting a lot, but that's sorta what you have to look forward to if anything on this list is missing or rotten and you have to replace it.
For the Bulkhead, the only people selling parts that are worth the bother is pegasus parts in the UK. The RN and YRM bulkhead pieces are total s**t.

Well.....after reading, researching, getting advise and tinkering, I realize that I will not be able to do the Series restore justice. Parts, pieces, vendors etc all becomes a blur. In that light, I have sold the Series. It will be going to a good home.
That being said, I have purchased a Defender 110 NA. This one is a "running restoration", and needs some TLC.
Thanks to all for the advice, and input. I am just changing "venues" as it were.

LOL. Well, congrats! But now this begs the question - did Dan buy the series?
