I lost mine on a corrugated road somewhere down in Belize. Heard a loud thump on the underside. Looked in the rearview mirror to see what I had hit and saw the dampener trying to keep up with me and losing ground fast.

Drove the rest of the way without. Never noticed a difference.

Yep

It's also a way to carry an extra engine/transmission/transfer case mount.

Something similar happened to me once, except it was the parking brake drum that went thump. I had been driving without the rear driveshaft... long story. After it passed me I stopped trying to keep up. I was just happy it didn't hit anyone.

Beautiful pictures. I've never been, but I expected Joshua Tree to have more trees.

He was in the lower part of the park, where it transitions from mojave desert to colorado desert. Joshua trees are prominent in the north western part of the park where the elevation is a bit higher and cooler with more moisture.

If you are making the trek out west then sure hit up Joshua Tree NP while you are out this way. Some cool stuff to see in the park. But, if you are driving all that way then I'd make the focus of your trip a run on the Mojave Road. Lots of history and things to see, plus more joshua trees than you can shake a stick at. Usually run over the course of three days, approx 120 miles all on dirt from the Colorado River to the Mojave River.

I don't care how many jokes I catch with my Disco 1. They may not be as good as a Defender. But I like them. Mine gets me to where I want to go.
