Back to Square One....

The engine has excessive wear.

The only thing that looked good was the timing belt.

This the one from Newman?

What's the plan? Remind me why you didn't consider rebuilding the one you have?

Yes it was...

I honestly don't know what I'm going to do.
I now have 2 engines that need a complete rebuild.

The 19J has a horrible reputation and the 12J is more reliable.

That's why I went with Rik's 12J engine.

We'll see... Right now I need to focus on work.

How many miles on the engine? Were you going/hoping for a simple drop in? I don't think a rebuild is that bad. I'd do it and at least you know you have a strong power plant going forward. Lot's of knowledge on this board and locals to provide guidance and hands-on help. MAR is coming! Hurry up!

Who knows how many miles.

Yes. That was the idea... a simple drop in and drive the shitbox. The motor was supposed to be good one from a Tithonus.

Besides spending $450 on a boat anchor... I've learned a lot about diesels.

------ Follow up post added September 13th, 2015 09:32 PM ------

Oh BTW... I'm of the opinion that I need to rebuild the 12J... not the 19J.

I'll have both heads and blocks checked and go with the good one. Hopefully

But I've been wrong before.

the NA diesels are not exactly known for incredible longevity. They are underpowered and thus most have been flogged to shit especially once they hit the states. It is a complete waste of time to put in a used unknown engine without cracking it open to have a look inside.Seemed like a better idea when I was in my 20's and I had my whole life in front of me to fix what might break later. Now, eff that, if you are going to all that pain to swap an engine out, make sure everything on or in it is right. Don't worry about MAR, just take your time and build the motor right. And don't spend a single on that turbo motor. You're better going Tdi.

The parts and wear disagree with you.

The later 19J's...late 88' on were not terrible as they made a few changes esp if they were low mileage...my 88' only has 82K on it and is pretty strong....if and when it craps out I will prob TDi it...

I took a gamble and it didn't work out for me.

And that's the end of it.
