That makes me feel less bad about having 7,000 unread emails waiting for me in my inbox. Well, most of them have been read and I simply changed to mark as unread with the intent of going back to read them. Seems about 100 per day come in and I cherry pick the most important and go from there.

I used to do this but it no longer seems to be an effective way to keep track of things for me.

Simple - I've got better things to do
I have a good friend who ruthlessly archives all unread e-mail quarterly. She says it makes her feel better, removes the guilt she sees when she looks at that big "unread mail" number. To date, I haven't had the guts to do the same, but it seems like a good idea.

Gmail is my best friend. I long ago gave up on filing e-mail in folders or tagging and for the most part just use the search to find stuff I need. It's a time saver.

Cool tips here for managing the deluge and...someday I hope to implement these

When I am out of the office for a week + upon my return I select the first email, hit the shift button and select the bottom email and hit the delete button.

If it is important they will send another one otherwise I guess it was not that important.

There is no way I could read all of them, I get a couple of hundred per day.

however I do keep all useful emails day to day and have a PST file that is 4 + gigs and they are all neat and tidy by person or category and job.

It is like an archive of the past 13 years @ my job and people are always asking for old emails that were sent out. You get good at keeping things in order when your inbox is limited to 100 Mb

I also do not delete any.

Microsoft says that a PST will have corruption issues after 5G...haven't had any issues myself but I just started archiving this year when I hit 6G.

I read them all on a day to day basis except when I am out of the office then I get too far behind have to do a mass delete.

For example I took 6 weeks off was out of the country and when I came back there was just no way to catch back up so decided to delete.

Seems like 95% of the email I receive is irrelevant or useless chatter the other 5% is important

Never! Trust me, I keep the PM box clean...but I can't just delete them all. It'd be like tossing out all my old Rover parts!

So I check my PMs and I have 889 out of 1,000 gettin' close to full so I click on the "Empty Folder" link and it asks "Are you sure you want to permanently delete all items in 'Inbox'?" ...I couldn't do it. Not today anyway, maybe tomorrow.
