"Member" status?

Is everyone listed as either a "member" or"site team" or are there various levels of membership as many sites have?

Banned means you've done bad things on a forum from spamming, community standards etc. you can look but not post

I don't know about the brakes, only their unreliability.

I had forgotten about Sasha (Departing 90.) That was a good use of banning power; by JimC I think.

no one saw the spam this morning on here about 05:30 EDT? from ArcarseLore? he's still a member...?!?
There were three posts about meds from Canada and the like.

I was up on Germany time, saw the complaints, nuked the posts and banned the user. Thought it was pretty lame to spam on Christmas.

These are automated vbulletin spam (software) bots so they probably aren't aware of Christmas. The only real defense against them is to require a PM after registration to the mods before being (manually) granted posting privs.
