Thanks for hitting the report post button on these - we're playing wack-a-mole today with these and the reports help a lot.

If you are browsing on regular web browser it looks like this and is in the upper right corner of every post.

Janet,
Instead of playing wack a mole why don't you just cancel their username?

We ban these accounts when they are discovered (and remove the posts). Today we had several spammers register and post.... more than usual.

You could probably get rid of a lot of them by blocking the IPs of tor exit nodes and known open proxies in your IPtables ruleset. These are mostly bots with a "mechanical turk" interface to answer special vBulletin registration questions and fill out CAPTCHAs.

Could it be just a coincidence that you got so many spammers within hours after the post ridiculing China for the fact that their moon rover died?

nah... I think that they know it's Valentines day and we could use some extra cheap pharmaceuticals of one type or another today.

Spam happens, despite various schemes to stop it..

I mentioned this suggestion before, but it's appropriate to bring it up again.
Anyone here registered as a user at. Range rovers.net can tell you that any new user needs to post two "introduction" posts in a special area before they are allowed to post in any general forum. Admins review the posts, approve the new member and then they have full privelidges.
Sort of like a "probie". Just saying, this would all but eliminate the hit-n-run spammers.

I have seen that on a few other web sites and if forces people to make stupid posts just to get their required post numbers made.
How about a $1 a month or $10 a year membership fee to post here. It would keep out the spammers, riff raff and would net you a tidy bit of spending cash. I would guess that most active members here would have no issue paying that. Hell, most of us drop $10 for a monthly LR magazine at the store.

On the forum I mod, you can't post until approved. A quick check of the IP address reveals the location. We just kill off the spammers

Checking IP address geolocation is pointless. Most spammers are proxying their connections through compromised/trojaned computers/home routers/servers etc.
