I used the adapter 7 pin to 4 flat, with no other conversion equipment. (ROW to a U.S trailer)
It works mostly. I get lights, brakes and turn signals on the trailer with my Rover lights off. However when the truck lights are on I lose brake lights. ....so it kinda works, but not fully. You need the electronic conversion box I guess.

Your confusion is understandable.
The EEC trailer wiring system is different (IMHO better) than the US system.
Over there, there is a single standard, seven pin system, while here we have 4 pin, 5 pin, 7 flat, seven round and probably a few variations not listed. Additionally, in the EEC trailers have separate turn and brake signals, which isn't the case in North America.
Sometimes you will see a vehicle in Europe with two Euro style trailer connections. The second unit provides power from the towing vehicle for lighting inside the RV/caravan, fridge, an additional ground, reversing lights and caravan batteries.

The one you mention, looks right for your needs. Call Eric at AB xtn 231 to confirm

Yes you would need the 9439A providing your 300TDI has a plug behind the RH taillamp for it.

Pretty sure there are no plugs. There may be a stray bullet connector or two that don't connect to anything. Could that be it? PO made a mess out of the wiring. It actually had trailer break system when I got it but I removed it completely as it was poorly installed and was corroding.

Eric.

I received the 9439A kit but my 300tdi harness does not have the male version of the plug that comes with the kit. Where can I get one?

I didn't think it was available separately, part of the harness

Must have been removed from mine then by PO. Let me know if you find one laying around. Otherwise I'm just going to have to remove it and wire it in. Thanks!

Hella manufactures the tow socket for virtually every euro auto manufacturer. The tow package wiring is an add on option for defenders as well as other Rover models and you can buy the rover version or the hella universal one from most any purveyor.

for example:

http://www.lrseries.com/shop/product....html?search=7 pin socket&page=1

Just the socket is available seperately as well

Thanks Doug. Just a little background: I bought the 9439A Flat 4 Wiring Kit from AB. Turns out my 300tdi harness does not have the male plug that is supposed to connect to the plug in the kit (see image) so I would have to either find one or cut the plug and hardwire it in. I am looking for the male end of this plug. I assume what we're looking at here in the image is the female end.

Any suggestions what I should do about the plug on the AB trailer harness? Since I don't have the male end in my 300tdi harness should I just cut it off and hard wire it? Does anyone have a spare make plug?

If you decide to cut your plug from the AB kit side, I'd love to get it off your hands.
And... Might feel biased, but I'd look for the European plug (if there is one such thing) or do a proper splicing to keep everything tight and out of water's harm.

I have never seen that particular plug/kit. but I deal with 25+ year old trucks and wiring ...

That looks much smaller than the UK plug. Is it an ex MOD vehicle?
