I agree on the floor on 116. I have a ST and thats what I'm looking for on a roof rack. I really like the rack design on the Black ST in the pics. Have the floor like in 116 and that would be perfect.

Will these racks be available to anyone, or just customers with their vehicles at the ECR facility going through a rebuild? I am on your wait list but would like it sooner than 4-5 years from now.

How is the wind noise on the highway with a rack like this? I currently have the LRNA accessory crossbars mounted on my ST to carry a surfboard, but when I drive above 20 mph the bars make a loud whistling or humming noise. Foam tubing doesn't help reduce the noise.

Ideally I would like to upgrade to the new ECR rack to carry a 9 ft surfboard and/or a 13 ft sea kayak. A floor is prefered, don't care if it is removeable.

Navy. It's not just a job, it's a job on a ship.

Any chance on having the rail go all the way around the rack? (like the one on the Willow Green 110 you did that's on Safety Devices website)

I would love to have a rack, but have garage door clearance issues. I would love a lower profile, or modular design which would enable it to fit under a standard garage door.
bjf -> Go to and build a new defender.
phoenix37 -> If only it were that easy...

ill second that john. i was just taking measurements to fab a flat, low profile rack that will enable me to get it the garage when needed. and easy was to take off the top would be great when taking the fiberglass top off etc. i am sure in the end though the ECR product will be top notch. i really appreciate being asked for input.

It needs a floor (i feel it is not nearly as useful with out one). I don't really see the point for a removable floor. I just need enough room in order to install the softtop (or realign it more accuratly since i have a badger II with the roll up sides).
Just do the floor in metal (grate or like #116) and be done with it.
The rack sides should be low but useful - 4-6"

my 2 cents
Defenders don't wear out they just need more parts.

Thanks for all the feedback. Look forward to hearing any/all ideas.

Have a good weekend!
I do not check PMs. Call or email if you need something.

ECR is not a parts source. We are not in the mail order business.

+1 on the open air feel.

My old red D90 soft top was pure joy to drive on hot SoCal days. Having a fixed floor would have not been the same.

I never had a floor on the rack on my soft top. I had some drop in panels to put behind the roof tent which is nice, they're not permanent.

I just use cases when putting gear up there since I want to lock it anyway.
