The problem with Witham's auction is that they put a high reserve on the auction items. They never sell with no reserve. Then you add the 20% VAT on top of the hammer price, that equates to no good deals!

Only way to deal with them seems to go visit and file a container with stuff you can actually sell in North America.
That said wish I had some dry storage over there for a 300tdi 110....

The VAT can be recovered once you provide proof of export. Truth is they should be able to work with anyone that documents the purchases will be exported and not charge the VAT. This is technically what they can do if they give a shit. What they want to do can be a different story.

We have never paid VAT on the 120 or so trucks exported directly from Withams.
Once you pay it, good luck getting it back.

VAT but, if you are in the UK buying spares, trucks what have you, when you fly out you get a claim form from the customs office at the airport and with copy of your receipts, you file it. Never had a claim turned down yet.

Many years ago I use to go to MOD sales that's when they use to give the stuff nearly, could get a running 109 for a couple of hundred pounds, those where the days.

Yeah, I was trying to be polite cuz I have no idea what they do on invoice. It would be odd, ime, to see a company charge VAT if they knew you were exporting the goods. But if they do there are channels to get it back but painful. Its designed to wear people down so they give up. Technically they aren't breaking the law that way. My staff are working on a 7 figure VAT recovery and it's beyond painful but worth it if you have the right facts and documentation.

Once bought a bunch of scotch, sweater, and Barbour stuff up in the highlands and when we flew out (Glasgow) there was a slot ina locked door to put your envelope in to claim the VAT back, not a person. Three years later I got a check for 60quid. A small portion of the actual tax paid.
So my perspective of the refund system is a bit tarnished.

Ha! That's probably called the glory hole method.

No, in all honesty, if it can be consumed in country they can't refund it. So the VAT on Scotch was probably the killer but the other goods should have been good to go.
