Talk about getting T-boned. I wonder at what speed but probably not more than residential speeds. Didn't appear to have rolled but it does look like the occupant(s) was/were extricated by the jaws of life (or whatever those tools are called). In this case, thinking a beefy slider with tree bar would go a long way towards maintaining survivable volume.

Not nessasarily. In '71 my mom was hit by a train while driving our '68 Fury III. The car looked worse than that Defender.
She did spend a month in the hospital, and in bed at home for about another month, with quite a few broken bones, but did survive without any serious long term issues.
