Batten down the hatches and stay away from tall trees. Good luck.

Seriously, hope all is well.

It became a class 1 hurricane on top of Puerto Rico.
Did you guys know that "hurricane" is actually a native american word, comes from Taino language (uracan).

Actually it's not Native American... It came from the Mayas.

Mayan god "Hurakan"... The tainos "borrowed" it, Hurican was the Carib god of evil.

Now I'm just waiting for it to continue to strengthen in the gulf stream and hit NC. We are long over due.

I know the general meaning of "native american" is for Indian tribes from what is today USA land, but I believe any human group in the american continent with presency before the spaniards came can be called "native americans", even if the most used term is "pre-hispanic civilizations".

Didn't know it was a Mayan word, good, I like Mayans.

Growing up in eastern NC, the direction this baby is coming does not bode well for us. That being said, I will probably be heading toward the coast this weekend to help family vs staying away. My wife's family's home in Atlantic Beach, NC is probably in a little trouble. Here's to hoping it shoots out to sea!

Julien, I hope everything is ok for you guys in the Dominican.

My parents' town in NC is on the Albemarle Sound and was hit hard by Hurricane Isabel back in 2003 (surges reaching the second floor of homes in some cases, boats moved many blocks inland, etc.). Luckily they're one of only a handful of homes there that is on higher ground and has a basement, but the old/mature trees will surely take a beating, and losses in the town and surrounding communities will be significant if it makes landfall at the strength that it is currently expected to. They've fizzled out before to tropical storms these past few years, so hopefully it'll happen again.

I have a bunch of pictures just like this after Isabel.

I'm in Charlotte and the Guard here is ramping up. Ironically, I'll be off to Eastern Europe on Friday for 10 days..worst timing possible. NC is gonna get hit hard no matter what happens at this point. Maybe not as bad as Hugo, but high winds play havoc in Charlotte.
