If so where can it be found?

That is not the best way to decide what to use....

- Space available to mount.
- Budget.
- Fabrication skills.

Thanks for reply, just been reading up and there seems to be such a wide varity that I thought maybe there was some sort of standard within the board for general pourpose, the 8274 is legend though with the reading and viewing pics of all avaliable on Defenders leaves a person wondering on if there is a generaly one used for all, along with the prices involved with a purchase like this

The two best in my opinion are: The Superwinch Husky 10 and the Warn 8274.

Both Warn and Superwinch offer a many other excellent winches.

Depending on how you want to use it, another option is a cheap harbor freight winch for looks and/or occasional use. They have a full replacement warranty.

Used Warn and Superwinch are always on Craigslist.

The 8274 is the best and is easily available cheap used. BUT, it is large and not simple to mount. Some of the newer higher end low mount Warns are nice and fast, but harder to find low cost.

The Husky's are nice and durable and foolproof, but very slow. A good choice if it is for a very rare emergency use.

Regardless, make sure you plan a proper mount and wiring and budget for suitable synthetic line and a good hook.

I would skip the Costco, Harbor Freight, Sams Club, (discount) winches. Plenty of people will tell you that they work but the last thing you want is your winch to crap out when you need it the most. No winch is 100% but you will have better odds with a name brand like Warn or Superwinch.

Warn

Hello, I used a warn 12000 while working for my dad for years. While it is a self recovery winch we used it all the time for moving LARGE rocks and stumps in landscaping. We usually used a snatch block. In Africa we use Warn but only for recovery. Warn is the only brand I have experience with and can certainly recommend them. I've wondered how some of the cheaper brands perform. Good luck!

I've gone the cheap winch route. Don't waste your money on a cheap one. I prefer Superwinch over Warn, because in my experience they are more reliable and they also come with a free snatch block. Cheap winches work fine, until they don't... Winches are something that needs to work 100% of the time. FWIW I had my 12,000 Milemarker winch replaced twice under warranty before I replaced it with a super winch EPi 9.0.

Fyi

If your running the winch from the cab you may not want cable from the control unit to get winched into the spool... Sooo my brother wasn't allowed to run the winch anymore!
Haha I've heard good things about super winch as well.
