Wider + Right Hand Column

I just wanted to give you all a heads up that next week we will be rolling out a couple changes to the site's "skin". Right now the forum software is set at a fixed width of 800 pixels. I suspect this was done way back when 800x600 pixel monitors were used. Times have changed and the resolution of monitors have increased so it's time to expand.

We will also be rolling out an optional right hand column which will contain a list of recent discussions which is very handy for seeing what's going on an finding another discussion. You will be able to turn off the right hand column if you don't like it through your UserCP. The right hand column will also showcase some of our Defender Registry trucks and run a feed of newly listed Defenders on eBay to keep an eye on Defenders being sold there.

Once again, you will be able to turn off the right hand column if you don't like it. I'd highly recommend testing it out for a week and then deciding. It is a convenient feature that takes a tiny bit of getting used to the layout but most people like it when they get used to it.

Can it be customized? It may be useful to have the calendar on the sidebar - I know it's not used all that often now/yet but it may get updated more if it's more visible...and we could have an idea on which events are coming up.

Just an idea - everyone feel free to disagree.

We can tweak what's shown in the side bar and upcoming events is an excellent idea. I agree that the calendar system is hidden so finding ways to show what's been added to it might encourage more people to add events to the calendar.

When it comes to per member customization, that's not really possible right now. I can put in some options to turn on or off some of the modules and also so you can set how many recent discussions to show. This way you can turn off the "fluff" if you are not into the Registry images and eBay listings and then increase the number of recent threads.

Keep the feedback coming...

I know this is a tease, but I just wanted to say I have gotten to try it and I really like this. At first I didn't think the recent threads would be terribly useful since I generally search for new posts anyway, but since it's dynamically updated you can just click through them and you'll see new ones (if there are any) on each page load.

The random rotation of images from the registry is awesome too. Rover porn all day long.

Well, there is actually logic on why the right hand column is used vs left. Basically, since we read left to right, our eyes spend very little time on the right hand side of the page. As soon as they get all the way to the right they start the process of going back to the left. You can see a heat map of this that Google had done on this photo.

We want the content of the sites (ie. discussions) to show up in a place that our eyes are used to seeing it. If we put a left column in place it would push the content over and it makes it feel even weirder. Another reason for right vs left is because pages will often be longer then what is in the side column. When that happens you have blank space below it. It looks nicer to have the posts lined up all the way to the left with the blank space to the right.

Good idea Dave. I will try to find a way to put in a drop down so you can choose from a few different auto eBay searches.

Hit me like a ton of bricks when I logged on today! I like it!

Now how a complet revamp, overhaul and update on the rest of the site beyond the forum! I would like D90 to overtake LRFAQ and be the central site of information and how to's. Kind of like the discoweb Tech how-to section but even better. The one we have now is stale and just a marginally organized hodge podge of thread excerpts.

I am glad you like it. I know it feels weird at first but we have found most people find it useful and it increases engagement on the other communities I work with.

We have plans to move all the other pages into a Content Management System. Once that is done we can expand access so a larger group of people can help maintain the information. That way we can add info, make sure it's up-to-date, etc without needing to know HTML or other web design skills. I don't have an ETA.

Is there any way to increase the number of threads on a page? I think its limited to 25 or something at the moment. Many sites give you the option to specify the number of items in a list, can we do something similar? I presume it was limited originally to reduce page load times on older slower, connections?

Liking the new layout so far.

You can do that yourself in your User CP --> Options and Settings --> Edit Options

Not sure if it gets you many more threads per page though.

I see where you can do it for the number of posts in a thread but not for the number of threads in a list? So when I hit 'get all new posts' for example from the top menu it gives a list of threads but limits it to 25 per page. This is the one I would like to be able to change. Did I miss it somewhere?

If you go to "Quick Links" on the top bar then select "today's posts" it will give you the option of going to the next page when you reach the bottom instead of only the latest 25 when you do the New Posts>Get All New Posts.

Maybe that will help.

Not sure I see/understand the difference? They both list them in groups of 25 on a page with no option to increase that number that I can see?

New posts will give you all threads with unread posts since your last visit, todays will give you todays only, both only list 25 at a time and give you the option to go to a new page at the bottom to get to 26+.

What I am asking for is an option to display more than 25 at a time in a threads list view, however you create the list.

I am thinking of something in the User CP like the 'posts in a thread' option that Josh pointed out. A way to increase (or decrease) the number of threads listed on a page rather than just have the default 25 setting.

The radio button used to turn off the right hand column does not actually turn off the right hand column.

The right hand column appears at all times, regardless of the state of the radio button in the user options page.

The right hand column gave me a headache the first day or two, but I'm used to it now.
