This thread turned out to be so depressing and uplifting at the same time. I'd love to get my hands on those bulletproof windscreens and side doors. Not a perfect solution, but an easy bolt on improvement.

Don't s'pose there are any LHD Sals front axles among those? Although it would be almost sacrilegious to tear into those poor things...

They have been named in 36 deaths in deployment. They were not up to the IED threat.

Nothing is. I've seen pictures of an M1A1 tank with the turret popped off upside down on the ground. The bigger we get, the bigger they get. Beyond MRAP's, anything we have that is not specifically designed to take a mine/IED hit underneath has no chance.

Armo(u)red vehicles have a limited lifespan not based on mechanical issues, rather based on their status as armo(u)r. Note the roof top mounted AC units which were fitted for use in Iraq.

Which speaks to the reality that you shouldn't try to defeat a tactic as a substitute for having a strategy. Technological solutions for an enemy TTP only mitigate things to buy you time to deal with the cause of violence (or find a way to leave...)

M1A1's aren't that hard to kill if you crack the fuel cell and start a fire (should be familiar given the oil cooler line stuff). Once it's burning, it's all over.

Other than MRAPs/MATV's the MTVR (aka 7 ton) made by the wonderful people of Oshkosh actually does extremely well-in fact last time I checked that was just as safe or safer than the v-hulls, mostly due to weight/height above ground.

The uparmored 110's are no better than flat bottom HMMWV's against that kind of threat-though some protection is better than none. Doug's point about the windshield illustrates well that every uparmor is just bullet resistant for a temporary period!

cheers-
Ray
