You are correct again. You have to run some long hydraulic lines to the front but not a big deal.
I don't think you have to have it in gear as you can put the transfer case in neutral. This means you can winch your buddies out of the mud while your car is stationary. But you can also have the car in drive and running to assist the winch if needed. Running reverse would not destroy pump simply reverses the flow.
They have the pumps and are selling them. I just bought mine about 4 months ago.
