Whats up with Paypal and holds? Anyone had this issue?

I havnt used paypal to receive money for years (2013) and my acct got deactivated, and my gf rarely has used hers
So I had someone send funds for a part Im selling and they put a 21 day hold on the funds?
Is that normal now?

Said if the buyer contacted them and said they got the item then it would be 7 day, I think its business days at that.

Wasnt it like 2 days or something?

I use my Square and get money same day at the same cost, less if I want it tomorrow.

This due to inactivity or normal now?

She has used it maybe 4x in 3 years, dont ever remember a hold but I think she used it to pay not receive.

I'd be willing to bet it's just due to inactivity. I mostly buy, but the few times I've sold, it's been same day and with PP to bank account transfers (BofA) taking no longer than 2 business days.

I went round and round with them on transferring money to the bank. They had a monthly withdrawal limit on my account of $1000. I would give all the info they asked for and the limit was still on the account. I did it several times and called 5 different times before the limit was omitted. Over all I had about 8 hrs in getting it sorted. PITA.

Went with a commercial acct years ago. No holds, takes 24 hrs to move funds to your bank acct.
No limit on transactions. They send you a 1099 in January though.

I use pp for everything from buying online to collecting rent payments. Never have problems with their responsiveness receiving or transferring to my checking acct. I bet activity is key.

Thanks guys

Is yours commercial as well?

Not sure she wants to go that route, and my re-establishing an acct will probably have the same hold issues even with a commercial acct you think?

I guess its used for buyer protection?

Like I mentioned I have had square and it works great, same day transfers if you want.

Wouldnt your CC give you the same protections as paypal?

Mine is not. I've never looked into what the benefits would be using a business acct. For buying online I feel it is an added layer of identity-theft protection and convenience though I realize there really is no such thing as full protection. For collecting rents from four different sets of tenants it is convenient for them to not have to write and check and mail it on time, plus free of fees to me when they use the friends option.

What is the "friends option"?
Never heard of that before.
Do they still charge you 3%?

I have a personal PP with no holds. It requires a link to both a checking account and CC with regular use. Earlier this month, I sold a Porsche 911 roller for $10k and transferred $5k to my checking account the next day. Easy. Friends and family allows you to send money with no fee. It is not for sales/purchases and can be a reason to disable your account if abused. I like PP and have used it for a long time.

iirc the f&f pmt option provides no protections but I'm not aware of any restrictions/limitations
