What is this project worth?

I don't want to sell it, but I should sell it. I hope that I will be moving in a few months and it wouldn't make sense to move it again.

'It' is a 1979 Intermeccanica. This is a factory-made replica of a 1957 Porsche Speedster which my Dad bought in the late '80s which is why it has sentimental value to me. Intermeccanica, which is still in business, built the car in their California factory in 1979.

It has been sitting in my garage collecting dust for a few years now. It hasn't been registered or insured for years. Life gets in the way. Realistically, it is not what I want. I want a modern German DD car and maybe a Defender to work on (in addition to the Disco).

Bear with me as I am not a VW/Porsche expert and I have a long list of things on my mind right now.

-Fiberglass body (typical '50s pale yellow)
-Mostly VW parts
-Does not have the flat floor of a correct '50s 356, i.e. there is a transmission tunnel
-Front disc brakes (356 had drums, I think)
-VW flat-4 with dual Weber carbs (chrome treatment applied by a previous owner)
-4 speed
-The gauge cluster is VDO (from a 914, I think)
-There are no windows, I have side-curtains for it

Problems:
-A few years ago, before my Dad gave it to me, a tree branch fell on the car and broke the windshield. The branch ripped the LH windshield post out of the fiberglass. In addition to the glass and the post, the branch broke the LH side view mirror.
-I only have the frame bows and leading edge of the top, the canvas is shot. I also have the side-curtains, but I don't remember their condition (the plastic is probably very difficult to see through)
-The rear bumper is not attached to the car - I have it, but it needs to be reattached
-Some of the trim pieces like the "1600 Super" logo need to be reattached
-There are a few spots with 'spider-webbing' in the fiberglass that I believe is typical of a fiberglass car of this age (the tree branch episode seemed to do surprisingly little damage to the body)

Replacement parts on hand:
-new LH windshield post
-new LH side view mirror
-new weather-stripping for windshield

I have attached 2 AWFUL pictures, but I hate when someone posts something like this without pictures, and this is the best I have. The pictures were taken for something else and the Speedster just happened to be in the frame.

I may be interested, but also have no idea what it is worth. Is it running? Do you have a number in mind?

Here is what is likely the upper end:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifie...php?id=1092736

I still have a soft spot for VW stuff, so if you want to trade for Defender project stuff let me know.

Per Mike, it seems clear that it is worth less than $22k (not that I needed help to figure that out). I know that it is worth more to me in sentimental value than it is actually worth. We can talk about the price more if you are serious. I would be willing to entertain an even trade for your NAS 110 (just kidding).

The old VW boxer motors are hard to kill. The car has been sitting for a year or two, but when that happens, it usually just takes a charger to the battery and a little starting fluid into the intake and it will start right up. I can do that this weekend if you want.

I just remembered that I never put the mileage in the original post. It has somewhere between 26k and 30k original miles since 1979.

Oh Lord, don't tempt me. Can I trade it for credit for future labor on a D90 diesel conversion?

Yup.

I've got VW "project" issues (its a sickness).
Still want to build an electric or small turbo diesel dune buggy someday as well.

I like the TD dune buggy idea.... I'm currently stuffing a 2002 "ALH" TDI into a 1995 Audi 90 Quattro 5 speed. Full harness swap over, full 2002 OBD2 controls - VNT 17/22 hybrid turbo, transporter nozzles, 11mm pump and custom intake mani... ECU remapped to a conservative 210hp - 320tq and a nice flat power band

Should be a fun little car.

I like VW stuffs too.

Its been done in a Bug before, but I still want to do it in a Buggy... or hide it all under a '57 Oval window Bug, that would be cool.
So many dumb project ideas... so little time.

What is the correct etiquette with multiple bidders? First to contact or meet a price? Give others a chance to match?

I've never sold something that garnered this much interest.

I don't want to be a dick, but there appears to be more than one person that really want it.

Wish I could be part of the melee...

If no-one has met your asking price I'd think it's reasonable to decline offers until you reach it, or a price at which the interest drops off and take your highest bidder.

Cash is king. If you have multiple people interested all at the same price (assuming it's your asking price) I wouldn't give any extra time to a first responder unless you've already communicated you would. At least request a down payment of some sort from someone who is holding up others from just coming and picking up the car from you.
Also, if the purchase is dependent on an inspection and the potential person is out of state and dragging their feet vs. someone who would like to inspect it personally and is local, I'd give precedence to the latter. Just my 2 cents.

Wow, people are going nuts for this thing.

Already have a bid for $8k. Someone else mentioned a trade for a Cayenne S.

If you are getting that much interest, then delete or change the ad.
Maybe put it on ebay and run an auction?

Ugh, yeah sounds like you priced it too low then. Hard to say how to handle it from here. Someone's going to be pissed either way
