Hey Chris,

I used to be a UH-60 driver myself, back in the good old days.

Now I am an architect.

Roof ventilation is used to draw the heat and smoke vertically making it easier for the interior attack crew to get to the seat of the fire. Vertical ventilation has to be well coordinated with interior fire attack. An attic fire for instance, the interior of a house that has a attic fire will be crystal clear. You need to get a line up in the attack and squirt just a bit of water on the fire. The confined space of the attic is ideal for steaming out a fire, because of the expansion rate of water to steam it takes very little water to put out a attic fire. If the roof is opened up before water is put on the fire you lose the advantage of confined space to steam out the fire.

Aside from all that, cutting holes on roofs with fire underneath is fun
