Westward Bound

Well Gents,

We're officially headed to Tejas.

Accepted a position a few weeks ago that will be based out of Houston (O&G related), and it's happening quickly- need to be there by July 1st. I hear Houston is a lot like NoVA, so it should be fairly intuitive- no wait, it was that Houston is nothing like NoVA! Could use some advice from you Texans.

The family and I made a brief excursion down last weekend to checkout the housing situation. I lived in Corpus Christi for a little while during flight training, so I knew what to expect, but my wife- did not. Accustomed to Arlington living, the sea of highway billboards was a little overwhelming for her, but a brief stop at Rudy's BBQ made things more tolerable. We began in the Woodlands and made our way around the city counter-clockwise- Spring, Tomball, Katy, West U, Heights, and finished up in Pearland.

We really liked the Heights, and expect that this is where we'll call home. Any thoughts on the area? Bringing the LR3, and Defender- are there any stellar indy shops in the area for repair?

We'll certainly miss our NoVA friends, and hope to get together with several of you before we take off, but we're also excited to get established in our new city and meet some new folks.

Off to buy a Stetson and spurs...

Enjoy the CHEAP housing and cost of living. It will be a 50% pay raise right out of the gate.
Congrats with the new gig. You will be missed at HH.

That's what I thought too, Russell- except somehow...it's not. The State's tax incentives are drawing so much business that the housing market has ballooned in the past couple of years due to demand. Arlington crazy? Not yet- but the prices will definitely impress you! Still cheaper, and that's a welcomed change.
Will definitely miss you guys at HH.

Maybe.. Maybe not. Ok, Ross, what will you do without, uh Whitlows or The Italian Store or maybe even the nasty place in the hellhole of Annandale?

Ross, welcome to HOUSTON! I was in town last weekend also, you should have hit me up. Give me a call, we should talk. I've got lists for all the things you need. Restaurants, attractions, repair shops, etc. (If the wife is still a holdout / skeptic...I've got a list of boutiques I put together to convince my girlfriend how great it is.) Since I semi-relocated 6 years ago, I've been compiling a database from all my local friends.

Heights is nice but you have to be careful as not so nice areas are really close by and there can be issues.

(per my many houstonian friends -- my knowledge is limited to my stays downtown)

District Taco isn't really genuine Mexican food it's a place to get hip urban tacos

Rudy's BBQ always soothes the jitters. Congratulations on your new job and welcome to Texas! Awesome!! My brother and his family live in the Woodlands. His wife grew up there and when my nieces were born they bought a house near her folks. It is pretty and quiet. Pine trees, azaleas everywhere, duck ponds, walking and biking trails/green belt, horse stables, parks and swimming pools. It is very family friendly with great schools and shopping areas tucked into the landscape. It's like a village just outside of Houston. The Heights I don't know. Oh and if you need someone to show you listings. He is a realtor. I can send you his contact info if you'd like. And he's a foodie like me, so I'm sure he will be more than happy to show you all the local places he knows of. They just went home a few days ago
