What about them? They have been discussed on here before. Taking vintage ROW trucks and restoring/upgrading once they are in country, and charging LA prices as appropriate.

All depends on the engine... you drop a GM LS motor in that bad boy and you will ease through DMV.

All of our problems here in California are related to emissions.

I believe the Mercedes OM617 is completely federalized and CA friendly as well...

re: Taking vintage ROW trucks and restoring/upgrading once they are in country,

Sorry I don't believe that is correct. Vehicles all come from a place in UK called DefendersUK. Posted pic on their west coast defender Facebook page shows owner at location in UK. All work is done there. Only a salesroom in LA.
That UK company also approached me immediately following the big crackdown soliciting sales of rebuilds to me. Very aggressive salesman. Not interested. I think they also supply to a place called EastCoast Defender. I could be wrong, but looks the same.

FWIW

I just went through this with the DMV. they want a letter from landrover stating they meet all US DOT regulations. They just changed the laws regarding import vehicles in the last six months. The 25 year thing no longer applies in Ca

They don't supply me (East Coast Defender)

We buy/restore/ship our own trucks from our workshop in the UK to our showroom in Orlando.

You are correct about West Coast, although I believe they do buy the odd NAS truck to refurbish out here.

I know we have talked about this before, but did they reference any actual state codes?

All I know at this point is the head of the DMV import division was there talking to the lady that works for the newly formed import task force while I was on the phone with her. In california only the are requiring the sticker on the door saying the vehicle is DOT compliant or a letter from Landrover stating the car meets or exceeds US safety standards

West coast defender import

I am talking to a guy in UK to import an original 86 defender diesel (original 2.5)
I would be importing to Seattle area.
If anyone has info on the following topics I would be very appreciative:
Approx shipping costs(seller says he will arrange shipping)
Import duties into the us...
Emissions test issues I might run into... (Vehicle has current mot in England)

Anything else is should be aware of...
I have checked the Vin and should please US customs.
Pretty new to this game so any info on the subject would be sweet.
Thanks a lot for your help

Doug Crowther is one I would talk to. He brought mine over and did an outstanding job. I would highly recommend his services.

Since you are located in Seattle I would suggest Brian. I believe it would ship into Tacoma.
