Well that was interesting

We took off from Des Moines early Sunday in the Defender.

Re-fueled in York, NE.

Instantly had water temp indicating bad things.

Pulled off (Henderson, NE) and found a garden hose to cool off the rad / tank so I could open it and found coolant was missing!

Filled up the rad and expansioin tank with 3.5L of coolant and drove back to Des Moines (268mi).

Let it cool off after we got home and it took 2.5L to fill it back up.

Needless to say, the trip to CO was made in the VW.

Got a known good 4.6 lying about?

Cheers,

Keith

Sorry to hear that Keith. I have some 4.0 blocks about if you end up having a bad block.

Probably a good move to go back with it.

4.0 and 4.6 is the same block... Take all your 4.6 stuff and transfer it into a earlier block... Use green coolant instead of dexcool... Or try a block sealer.. I have a 4.6 in my classic and was using coolant.. Ran a block sealer through it and fixed it...

Thanks Eric, see you Saturday?

"Take all your 4.6 stuff and transfer it into a earlier block..."

I are corn-fused...it's the OE 4.0 that needs help...and only green coolant is allowed in my Buicks, er, Rovers...

Sorry..when you asked for a known good 4.6 I thought you were after that because you were replacing your 4.6.. All 4.6 engines from memory were to use dexcool but the common belief is that the dexcool is causing the head gasket and block to sleeve leaking problems...
