For those who use Right-Stuff gasket maker, I'd let it "skin over" for about 10-15 minutes.
For something like a water pump or thermostat housing, just use a thin bead.

If I put anything on a water pump gasket it is always Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket. I think it is the same as that Indian Head stuff.

another I use is hi tack just to hold gasket in place and fill minor imperfections that may cause seepage...also in the event of future failure, replacement or removal, brake cleaner dissolves the hi tack and gasket comes off with out scraping.
