Welcome to defenderwiki

Hey all - Charles and I decided to get this wiki thing up and running. We've got defenderwiki.org up and running, but there is no content yet. We've got it set up so that only registered users can post content so we don't get pages full of Barack Obama jokes. As far as I'm concerned, there's no limit to the types of defender content we'll have, whether it be repair, maintenance, aftermarket mods etc, but me and the mods will go through it and keep the writing understandable and the format coherent. Please feel free to sign up if you want to contribute, otherwise just remain an observer and watch it grow!

I am sure that Jim will follow up with info, but generally you request it from the admin of the wiki site ie Jim

Not to be obtuse, but will it eventually steal content from this site? Reducing the extreme value it provides?

You are being obtuse. I think it is just a format to store a lot of cool and useful stuff but not the type of discussion and back and forth that D-90.com is for, but I will let JimC explain.

Ron aka evilfij (this is my real name, really, it is)

Yep, format difference. The nature of a forum buries all the content. Plus, for example, everyone writing ST and SW doesn't aid searches, and it can be hard to find the "best" thread on a particular topic.

Thumbs up

I'd make the Contents that you have there a subsection of something such as "Manual" or "Technical" ... and then make some other higher levels, such as;

  • History
    • NAS
      • Registry
    • ROW
  • Technical
    • Workshop Manual
    • Tricks
    • Engine Conversion
      • 4.6 Swap
      • 300TDi
  • Accessories
    • Off Road
      • Suspension
      • Armor
      • Lockers
    • Performance
      • Engine
      • Exhaust
Just an idea..

I agree. There is a ton of great information here, the problem is it is completely burried. Given the fact that you need to get an exact word match, sometimes it is often hard to get to the correct answer. Being able to drill down by category also has the potential to expose the user to information that they may not have explicitly known to look for. The not knowing what you dont know is often worse than not being able to find what you are after.

One thing we should do is avoid any duplication of information - there is a Defender wiki page that has been growing over time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Rover_Defender

I think that info should be re-done in greater detail.

That makes sense to me. Please note that this is a wiki, so, just do the change! You can "discuss" it, but you can also go ahead and just do it.
I would also like to have a living "part substitution" page so folks can post updates on what part would work, where they bought it and for how much (just for reference since that would change all the time).

It also seem like the wiki community rules have evolved (at least since I looked at this) and not netiquette seems to state that we need to have references to other sources as well (i.e. threads on this site and others as well as book references). I think the goal is to allow democracy to rule (i.e. the more people thinking the same way/thing rule the virtual planet).

I think you need both. When doing a project we should be diligent to capture all relevant info directly, but also link back to sources and discussion threads here so that someone cane confirm or research themselves if they want.

Part substitutions would be a great topic. So would capturing all bolt and thread sizes etc.

BTW, I don't like the front page right now. Way too much stuff on it. It should just be the entrance to the rabbit hole, with menus on the left to get you started (or search). I'll try commit some time to helping get it organized soon - once the structure is in placed the rest will follow.
