Water vs Oil based paint

I know nothing about current rules but in California only water based paint exists now. most body shops will say its crap. Is this true for everywhere?

Not that I need to paint anything but if I wanted to paint my truck it seems weird I can't get it to as good of a standard as it originally had.

I claim total ignorance on paint so I was just curious to discuss.

In all seriousness, California needs to declare it's independence from the United States. I can live with 49 stars on the flag.

It's extremely difficult to get oil-based paints in Massachusetts also, but I think you can still buy it by the quart (not by the gallon) and its become exceedingly expensive.

Well difficult and not available are different. I wonder if the body shops in MA use water based paint now. CA that is all we have.

Use this map as a proxy for restrictions on oil-based paint. Blue indicates water based. Red indicates both are ok.

Water base

Only a matter of time before all states are water base only like all paint work, careful prep ,good clean equipment and a seasoned tech and it's all good.

This also brings up a question about single stage paint. Do people repaint defenders with it? I talked to a shop that works on range rovers and they told me they don't use it. Just base and clear. Seems odd as I know it is available.

IDK I live in Illinois and bought a gallon of this not too long ago.

We use the same thing on the 2500+ fire hydrants in the Village I work for.

The new Imron formula isn't as nasty as it was in the years past. You no longer need to use a downdraft respirator. (but still should use a respirator) It is a very hard single stage paint. They still use it on commercial applications like bulldozers etc. I have used it on a Rover and have been very happy with it.

I guess that is one reason why some of the car manufactures have moved to Tennessee and the Carolina's.
