Wasn't Expecting This:

Wierd to See the mid-80's imports making the list on jalop for best diesels, surprised they thought of it.

http://jalopnik.com/5950187/the-best...ium=socialflow

Although the 12v/24v 5.9 / 6.7l cummins didnt make the list, and the 6.2 GM POS did, so it may not be that credable.

The cummins should be #2 where military vehicles are. The VW tdi is an amazing vehicle I will say. However, the best ever should be the old merc diesels.

I was impressed with the BMW diesel. I'd drive one if it was a wagon.

Only auto and only 4 door (and also really spendy!) so I ended up with the VW.

Yea the only auto part sucks. The other half of the household requires one though.

I feel your pain. Between the gf and the caretaker I now have two autos around.

The 5cyl is a good motor, not doubting that, but the older tdis, specifically yhe 1.9 ALH code is the perfect balance of computer and mechanical, and is a strong motor that can take alot of power, my 99.5 has 294k miles on it, original turbo stage 3 tune for 210k miles. And many others on the forum just like it just peak around the mkiv section of tdiclub there are many others with more. That mercedes motor should definetley take the prize for bringing diesel to where it is today, but im not so sure its better than the vw tdi.

The only problem with the ALH tdi is that they are in crappy old VWs! The mkv was a huge jump in quality of vehicle IMHO and the old mercs were high quality with everything.

Saw it parked in Brooklyn last month. Looked like a nice 110.
