Virginia refund on diesel fuel tax?

Is it true that Virginia as of July 2013 now will refund fuel tax on diesel used in your car?

I don't see the amount of the refund, but it looks like the likely reason is to bring the tax rate for diesel passenger vehicles in line with the gasoline tax rate.

9 cents a gallon. Based on receipts. Kinda boils down to what is your time worth to track it.

How about the expense on Virginia's side to review and pay it out. They should just reduce the price at the pump.

"Kinda boils down to what is your time worth to track it."

Estimate the use/spend and go to battle if it ever comes up under audit. The percentage of returns being audited these days is so small the risk is pretty small. Especially if the big stuff is in line.

I have been throwing the receipts from the Ford in the console and take them out monthly to put in a file...will submit everything later this year and probably get enough money to buy the lady some dinner

Ed are you inferring you are actually burning diesel again ? I think that Virginia is assuming that few citizens will follow through and that state will profit as a result. I think doing it this way to prevent trucks over 10k gvw from getting a break sucks.

Connecticut needs this, especially with the $0.43 per gallon tax on diesel, would save me some money driving the jetta and cummins around.

As with probably all rebates, they count on few people following through, as mentioned.
I track vehicle expenses with an app called aCar, http://www.zonewalker.com/acar
Though before relying on something like that, better make sure it's acceptable or if you need actual receipts. I would think the latter.

Va is probably going to need receipts so tracking fuel ups through a program will not suffice.
