Vehicle numbers

Looking for clarification on vehichle numbers. I notice on some D-90s that they are numbered for example
1 / 500 and some are numbered in a four digit number. Why are they different?

The 1/500 numbers are only for 95 and 97 D90 wagons and 93 D110's. All others are soft tops for the years 94, 95, and 97. There are a few outliers, however. The link above goes into greater detail.

Actually 1/500 only applies to 95 SW's and 93 110's. I think the Willow green 97 SW is 1/250. All other 94/95/97 ST and SW were a 4 digit number which means nothing special about those trucks
