Vacatio help

Need some suggestions on nice places to stay in the Bahamas -- Freeport or Nassau...

Also, any other Caribbean destinations I should consider? Trick is American has to fly there so I can use miles.

St. Maarten/Martin is one of my favorites. Half French and half Dutch. Stay on the French side, the food is better and the beaches are at least topless unless you are at Orient Bay and then you might see about anything.

British Virgin Islands: Tortola is my favorite... American VI: St. John's is great, close too St. Thomas, easy to grab a ferry.

St. Lucia is excellent too.

Take Paul's advice and take American to St. Martin, but then hop over one more island to St. Barths. It's a small French island (8 sq mi).

Saint Martin is a nice place. Rent a car, explore the small island, stay in Marigot, stay clear of Philipsburg, spend an afternoon kicking it back at the Sunset Beach Bar with $1.50 Red Stripes watching/feeling/ducking/hanging-on-for-dear-life the landings and takeoffs (very unique experience), then hobble over to the Maho Beach Casino to complete the evening. Take a day trip to St. Barths (hotels there are $$$$). If you are looking to be pampered, plush amenities, a resort feel, shopping, don’t go to Saint Martin. If you are looking for something very small, remote, with a laid back island feel, give Viegues a look. Easy to reach via Puerto Rico.

Thanks for all the comments gents. Looks like we might be on the left coast. Looking into Nicaragua now. Some friends have a couple of places down there and are close by so we thought that might be fun...

Regarding Nassau...

I spent a week in Nassau last fall SCUBA diving. I recommend Paradise Island all the way and nowhere else. Nassau by itself isn't much fun. Hot, humid, and streets are cramped. Shopping for local trinkets and knick-knacks gets old quick. You could spend a half day doing it and that'll be enough for a lifetime.

Night time on Paradise Island is safe and romantic. Night time on Nassau proper isn't much fun. Mostly deserted on the main strip, with the occasional shifty individual or pack of feral dogs.

There are free shuttle buses that take you to the calmer southwest side of the island for more SCUBA diving. Easy to hop into one in the early AM and return in the PM.

We stayed at Coral Towers on Paradise Island, dove NDL, Monday-Thursday with Stuart's Cove on both Paradise and the SW side of the island and we had a lot of fun.

So we decided on Anguilla. We're staying at the Viceroy Anguilla. Looks like an incredible place and we'll be able to hit the St. Maarten spots you guys all mentioned. I'll give you a full report when we get back.
