Usal Beach Campground - random find

Last Tuesday, Carrie and I left San Bruno, generally north, on one of our random explorations. "Where do you want to go?" "I don't know, where do you want to go?"

Tuesday night was a bed & breakfast. Wednesday night was a Hipcamp.

During our Thursday morning 'planning' session': How do you pronounce Sinkyone? (Sinkyone Wilderness State Park.) Where is the campground and is there room?

Made a phone call, the ranger said no reservations, never fills up. Off we go.

Fortunately, my Garmin was spot on finding the intersection of Highway 1 and Usal Road. We were driving north, from Fort Bragg.

Drove in Thursday afternoon, drove out the same way Saturday morning.

A great place if you are prepared. Primitive camping, which means no water and few outhouses. I guess it's been dry, we found no puddles or deep mud on the road. Someday, we want to take the road north all the way, either by ourselves, or with a group.

Our 1986 ex MoD 90 2.5NA diesel soft top had no problems. But that may be because we turned around as soon as the sand got really soft and deep.

My wife doesn't like going anywhere that doesn't offer room service.
Good pictures of a good woman, and the 90 wasn't so bad either.

In October there is MAR, Expo, and then Uwharrie the first 3 weekends of the month.
Going to any of them?

Yes, I am blessed, Carrie is a very special woman.

She is the one who said "let's go camping this week." She is the one who said "let's buy 3 Defenders and our Discovery." She is the one who said "let's buy a Discovery so we can ship it to Iceland and go camping for 3 months" (in 2003.). She is the one who has put 2/3 of the nearly 40,000 miles on this 90 with no A/C and no power steering cross country by herself (and STILL loves it!)

Showing my ignorance, when and where are MAR, Expo and Uwharrie? The first couple weeks of October are out. Carrie is leaving SFO the last week of September, driving our 110SW to Wisconsin because she wants to be there when one of our Nieces & Nephews gives birth. (She is on a not so secret mission to persuade them to buy a Defender.)

I've learned to never say never with Carrie. Plus VA is much closer to Wisconsin than SFO. Plus it might be good timing for picking up our third Defender from the shipper.

Yes, looks like the same spot.

This was a quick trip, went in and out the short way to Highway 1. Some day soon, we'll take the wilderness road all the way north.
