Urban Legends: Defenders

What urban legends associated with Defenders have you come across?
Here are a few that I have heard…

  • There is only one factory NAS D110 not in alpine white, but in beluga black, thought to be owned by Ralph Lauren.
  • “Jay Leno will pay 45k at least, he has a whole filing cabinet full of disembodied Defender VINs and will do anything to get more. Let me see if I can find his number...” (from Jim C)
  • The Haunted Defender 110: http://www.defendersource.com/forum/...eferrerid=2315
  • Defenders getting more that 18 mpg…
An urban legend is a form of modern folklore consisting of stories thought to be factual by those circulating them. The term is often used to mean something akin to an "apocryphal story." Like all folklore, urban legends are not necessarily false, but they are often distorted, exaggerated, or sensationalized over time. (Definition from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_legend)

Well I want to bunk one of your urban legends, while I was in Yellowstone 2 weeks ago, my Defender got 19mpg several times. I checked and rechecked. I even over flowed the damn gas tank trying to make sure I really filled the tank all the way up the second time. A little over 19mpg three times in a row....that was on 85 octane gas to boot.

But even though I saw it with my own eyes I still think it is BS.

I call BS on the JAy Leno legend. He has enough money to buy as many as he wants. If he needs 90's that bad why isnt he buying up all the $15-25k 90's that I see for sale. He pulled up next to me on Magnolia Blvd in Burbank once and didnt seem too interested in my 130. I would think if he was at all interested in Defenders he would have at least gave a nod. I have also seen him in the auto book store on Magnolia near Portos and he didnt spend any time in the Land Rover section

I've always wondered where the elusive laser red and java green factory painted d90s have ended up. We saw the arizona blue one pop up on ECR's site, but you would think more info would be out on these trucks since its been about 15 years.

Well... I was out in the Saline Valley last week and I noticed a star-burst pattern on my tire, so I guess I have a leak in a hub seal now. Still nothing on the driveway. Wish I could say the same for my Disco.

True.

Had a girl down to her panties while I drove through downtown the other weekend.

Does it count as an urban legend if I just made it up? I was trying to say something that was clearly BS - maybe I'm too credible or I just have a trusty-looking face.

Anyhoo, the Jay Leno joke is based on the already existing BS story that Jay Leno pays exhorbitant prices for "x" just so he can get all the "x" in the US or whatever.

And also for the record, I don't have Jay Leno's phone number.

Follow-up Post:

But there is a legend about a Defender specialist in Kansas with a sheep out back...

Did I not see a pic of this truck before or is my memory just urban legend bent?

You and me both. I have been looking for 5 plus years. I am sure someone at LRNA could illegally look them up . . . .

One NAS 110 was painted black by the dealership that sold it in 1993, I have no idea about the Ralph Lauren connection.

I squeezed 18.5 the other day. Probably could get it up to 19 if I really tried.

I've been there, and it's true. But if you've ever been to Wichita, you would be more understanding.

No urban legend on Defenders that I know of yet, however heres an interesting Land rover concept truck story, about 5 years ago I think, British Pacific was selling the Tangiers Orange Range Stormer on their website for like 17k. It was sitting in Irvine and it could not titled by anyone if bought as either DOT told LRNA that they either had to destroy it, ship it back to the UK or sell it to a private collecter. I believe they did the latter.

As far as panties getting thrown, nope, has not happened yet....but I will share this crazy story that happened this past weekend. I picked up 3 pretty hot 21-22 year old girls to go clubbing at Minx on saturday that I met the day before at Villa Sorrisso in my D90, they were pissed when I showed up with the D90 instead of the LR3. hehe. I told them "hey this is a classic and you guys should be honored" with a smile and chuckle. Of course they didn't think so but so what, they were hot young poor girls who wanted to get drunk and party. The one I liked (smoking hott..at least an 8) played hard to get on me, which was alright, hell at my old age of 34, I don't get butt hurt when a girl dosen't want to put out. But her friend who gogo dances at some night club here in LA started macking on me on the dance floor so I made out, molested and dry humped her the whole night. It was awesome. Heres the funny part, at the end of the night, they all piled into the D90 all exhausted, two in the front seat and one in the back. (Yeah I know its illegal but hell I just wanted to get them all back home at the same time because they didn't like my friend who wanted to take one of them home) The girl I made out with was stroking my pole and making out with me and I was molesting her too while doing 70-75 using one eye to keep between the white lines while her friends were slumped over sleeping. Man that was the most fun I ever had in my D90.
