Update on white arkonik 110-- final word

For those who are interested, I am the fellow who was once the most vehement Arknoik detractor. I was told that my name was on the top of Arkonik's trouble list to be resolved.
I now have the final assessment of my experience with ordering and receiving a fully restored '88 110 County SW (photos attached) into Newark, NJ.

I had experienced some nagging resolvable issues with the truck. In order to remedy these issues without letting things drag on, Arkonik sent their chief quality control technician(Jeremy) to my NJ home on January 18th.

I found Jeremy to be an absolute gentleman in addition to having a wealth of knowledge and know how. His manner is one of absolute honesty and candor, even if the information imparted is not necessarily favorable.

He spent 2 1/2 days placing all new door seals, removing the carpet in all foot wells and cargo areas and replacing this carpet with removable snap on matts, placing a new higher amp alternator, placing a new radio head unit, retreating the door interiors with rust preventive, as well as other "tweaks" to absolutely maximize the truck.

During this process, I gained insight into what Arkonik and any other restoration experts are up against in producing a product of this quality from a 25 year old vehicle. I can elaborate if anyone wishes.

The bottom lines are these………
1. While I did not originally buy into the defender fanaticism proclaimed by Arkonik, I can attest that it is in fact the case. Judging by their extraordinary efforts to make my experience a truly rewarding one, these folks are trying to do the best job possible. Yes, I think there were mistakes and misjudgments along the way. I attribute these to a learning curve, naiveté, and perhaps somewhat being overwhelmed by their new found number of orders.

2. Every one who has examined my truck (Andrew Taylor on this forum, Lanny Clark of VT. and Orvis 109 fame, and Mike Hopwood, have been impressed with the soundness of the restoration.

3. At the end of the day I have what I consider to be a gorgeous 110, built to my specs. The importation process was a non issue and the truck was delivered to my front door.

Agree with the above and thanks for the update.

The problem that will continue to plague the UK based restoration shops, besides history and reputation, is that the available engines for import have been less than desirable - 3.5 v8, 2.5 NA, 19J. Now that we are in to 200tdi and the 90s, the restorations will not be as behind the 8 ball as shops in the US doing 300tdi, more modern rover v8s, and GM type swaps.

If they could support it, a UK based shop could do the restoration in the UK where parts are endless and reasonably priced, import to the US, and then do the much needed engine/gearbox upgrades prior to delivery.

110 cost

You can go to Arkonik website and configure a truck of your choice, the way you want it.
They will email you the price and will follow up.
My exact truck is now about 40% more than what I paid 1 1/2 years ago. That includes a 4000 charge for optional continuous photo and video progress updates, and a 9000 charge for a 2.5 TD engine.

They really should sublet engine swaps once the trucks get here. Glad to hear they stepped up a fixed the 'unfixable' water leaks.

i think the key word is "continuous" ...not speaking on their behalf because I'm not 100% certain but i believe you have the option to have photos and video uploaded daily... not sure why you would would want/need to be update that frequently but id imagine it involves a certain amount of manpower/bandwith

My photo record was included in the price. It was not daily updates, but they were 1-2 times per week. The total record has to be 2-300 photos and a video of the engine cranking up for the first time. These records are then sent to you on a memory stick and the portal at Arkonik.com is still functioning.
I guess its all about the experience?

40% more than the $76,000 I paid. There were no additional charges for photos or 19J engine at the time of my order inception. Apparently they are in effect now. I did an apples to apples quote(then and now) and I think the total was around $108,000. I repeat, this total was including the photos and 19J additional costs.

Glad to hear you are all sorted out, I too had a very rewarding experience with Arkonik recently. Imported my 89 110 with a 2.5TD that was doing ok, but had the symptoms of most, oil out the air filter yadda yadda yadda. Knew I wanted a 200tdi and Andy and his team of experts rebuilt one top to bottom, crank, valves, turbo, IP, starter, rad/inter cooler, complete exhaust. All ready to drop in, which was delivered as promised. We held a wrenching party over in my garage and she came alive after 12 hours of goofing around.

Having never rebuilt an engine to this level, didn't realize it was like brand new and would need to go through a "running in" procedure, which Arkonik provided and repeatedly reminded me to utilize. Once the engine was in and I went over the procedure again, I had a lengthy phone call with Andy and his lead mechanic Stuart walked me through the finer points and answered all of my questions.

Have absolutely no concerns, would highly recommend Andy and the boys at Arkonik, and look forward to enjoying my 200tdi for many years to come!
