Question Under Bonnet LEDs

Has anyone here installed LEDs in the engine bay or on the bonnet itself?

I'm looking to do this to the Classic I just picked up and didn't want to reinvent the wheel if its already available as a kit of some sort.

I was thinking of going with a marine application but not sure they will hold up to the heat.

Eric

I did on my 110 w a 200tdi. Used the waterproof strip $10 for 15ft from amazon. Stuck it on and used cable guides riveted to the bonnet to help keep it in place. Did it on the "cool" side of the engine ie away from the turbo. Will take pics later.

I used some Cree XPG2 LED stars that I bought from ledsupply.com for replacing the door ground lighting on my 95 RRC. I'm sure they would be great for bonnet lighting. The single LED puts out 300 lumens and the 3 star can be over 1100 lumens.

They have alot of different LED configs and the their support can help you out with getting a proper configuration if you aren't electrically inclined.

They're not the cheapest, but I doubt you get more choice than that:

how have these been working for you? in the comment section by the seller, they say don't go over 12V, so I'm assuming that means 14V would burn them out.

Eric, are you headed to Romp? If so I'll give you a couple of waterproof LEDs that'll work perfectly and are super bright. If not you can just paypal me a couple dollars for shipping and I'll send them to you. They look like this:

the LED strips have been working well for me. I installed a total of 15 feet inside my 110 on the internal roll cage, one strip on each bar and under a shelf I built. They have been on for hours at night when working on stuff or cooking etc without any problems. I have them wired directly to my secondary battery as I have battery cut off switches and didn't want to turn on everything just for the LEDs. so they get a direct 12.x volts from the battery. I will take some pics and post later.

OK here are the nighttime shots taken with my iphone no flash. Last one is a red LED strip i put in behind my head so i can see the dog and my son for night runs so I can see them (I use a mirror for watching the back seat, works perfectly). The first few are the leds for lighting up the cab when parked. The 4th one are the bonnet leds.

Sounds like you've only used them though with engine off, so they haven't been tested at 14V have they?

Under Bonnet LEDs

Have not been tested directly at 14V but I have used them with the engine running without any issues. I had battery issues on a Death Valley trip that required lots of idling to charge the battery for the fridge. Did it at night before bedtime to top off the battery. Idle for 20-30 min with the lights on no problems. And the red ones run for hours at night while driving since I use them to keep an eye on my son and dog.
