U.S. ICE Seizing Cars

http://auto.ocregister.com/2009/12/0...an-juan/23209/

i feel like they got there priorities wrong. They won't go to peoples house and "seize" the illegal immigrants and import them back, but they will spend money to go get and seize cars

I dont get it either. that car:

1. never filed for welfare
2. never filed for unemployment
3. never filed for free education
4. never filed for social security
5. never filed for health care
6. never voted for Obama

It probably never watched FOX news either. Sad story.

Gov's take is that they may have been legal then but they are illegal now.

10 years to decide the car is illegal?!! Agent says it is a real hazard and danger to the public, I bet it hasn't been driven 5000 miles in 10 years. I think this guy pissed somebody off.

There are less 12 of these cars in the world. Odds of seeing it on the road are zero. Odds of being in an accident are lower than Horsey putting new rotors on tonight.

Car is uglier than a vector.

Just like when you cross border, ICE and other government agencies are just going to use Google you, or use the web to find illegal importation going on. This sites name "d90 source" could take on a different meaning. D-90 "anonymous" source? I am surprised they have the resources for this though.

"In the affidavit filed in support of the seizure, Zampoliís import agent stated on customs documents when the car was imported that it was worth $125,000, even though the car originally sold new for $600,000, ICE said."

The gov. didn't get their fair cut when the car was imported, so they went after it is my guess.

Couldn't agree more....

I know it is repetitive, but people should listen to this every time they have the urge to talk

Years later, someone finally speaks truth out loud that the Vector looked like shit with wheels. Some football head in high school told me it was prettier than the 959 and everyone somehow agreed and believed him. Thanks, Barry.

I hope this guy fights them and wins.

Things that seem odd to me.

The car does not have US plates on it, does it even go out on the road or is it just a collector display?

"produced by automotive engineer Claudio Zampoli."

The owner and the automotive engineer that produced it have the same name, seems like since he produced it / made it / manufactured it there should be a way to make it legal?

"Zampoli’s import agent stated on customs documents when the car was imported that it was worth $125,000, even though the car originally sold new for $600,000, ICE said"

Since when do you have to pay import taxes on what something was valued at when new VS what you paid for it? Just becuase the car sold new for 600,000 that does not mean that is what he paid or what it was worth. And if he was the person that designed it, made it, manufactured it then maybe he only paid 125,000 for it?

"the Italian car is one of fewer than a dozen such vehicles"

I thought there was a loophole for cars that were produced in less that 100 or something?

From what I understand to bring a puma in for farm use you have to prove you have a farm and be bonded.

I am happy to talk to them about fixing their D90s, but if they start asking question other than how to replace or fix X, I won't talk to them.

No offense to .gov people as some of them are fine people, but if the .gov comes to talk to you, just say no.

It would seem that a far more appropriate methodology would have been to send a demand letter for the $11,875 in duty plus a penalty for lying on the entry form as well as interest for the past 10 yrs. Sending 10+ agents and spending god knows how many research man hours etc seems an extremely unintelligent use of resources. Perhaps if their 2011 budget gets denied they will be forced to evolve past this type of display.

After reading the skyline guys article, I'm glad I'm not a premier US restoration shop with Tdi,Td5,and Tdci restorations/conversions displayed on my website or in process...seems like these guys have over reacted and seized vehicles and closed shops based on a whole lot less.
