Turbo F1 Engines - How They Started

Not exactly rover-related, but I figured some of the gearheads would find it interesting!

Those were the days when the drivers had balls and not computers controlling everthing!
Crazy days....the equivalant to the Killer B's (Group B) rally cars, it was so nuts they had to ban them!
The BMW 4cyl Turbo F1 engine of that era put out 1200 Hp and they had room for more....but the rules didn't allow it!

BTW....season starts tomorrow in Australia!

Awesome! I thought the video was amazingly old school. Cosworth was making positive molds out of hand chiseled hardwood, casting blocks, and machining engines on manual knee mills.

Their dyno setup used makeshift wood controllers and all sorts of obviously scrounged up bits. Real old school engineering.

You have to keep in mind....the most amazing part of this old technoligy, the rules in F1 were for a displacement of 1.5 litres!

1200 hp out of...1.5 litres....imagen the possibility's, electric cars my ass!
